Dear all, apologies for the two week delay which is inexcusable. I want you to know that this was a very tough contest to judge because there were so many excellent entries (over 300!). I am very impressed by the work you all have done, there are many beautiful designs that were submitted showing an enormous amount of talent here. After eliciting feedback from many friends and colleagues, I have selected a design from Naveen Kumar S. (@naveen14198600) to be the winner. It is sealed so I suppose you cannot see it, but it is an original design featuring a hand in a white shirt holding hands with a bare android hand like I have never seen one before - full of emotion linking beautifully to my subject matter. Look for it in November on Amazon! Honorable mention would have to go to Federico S. (@fedesoloa) who came up with (also sealed) a brilliant take on the Monty Python "Life of Brian" cover which capitalizes on the emotional connection people already to have to that film.

(...continued from above) I also very much appreciated the entries from Kelsey B., Kawsar A., Piya Rani N., Dewi. W., Noureen A., Neha R., Probir Kumar G., Ardika F., Rohit Dinesh C., Kayode O., Aman Ullah A., Leeon, Nahid E., Imran I., Omer F., Md. K., Nozrul Islam, Hassan R., Oleksandr H., Moch Imam B., and Raihanul Islam P. You are all very talented and have submitted solid, professional entries. Unfortunately, as Noureen wrote in her very nice comment (and as you already know), there can be only one winner. If I could give just one piece of general feedback to all, I would have to say that inspired design should go beyond *how* you arrange elements to *what* elements you display, which should be in turn driven by *why* you are designing to begin with. (Simon Sinek has some great YouTube videos and a book on the topic which I can heartily recommend.) The challenge here was visually creating that emotional link to the topic.

(...continued from above) Admittedly, it is a very difficult task I gave you. Even still, I saw a lot of entries that neither had a link to the topic nor an emotional element in them. Some tried to focus on money and success as underlying motivators for reading this book, but (as I pointed out in my feedback already) these are way too generic - every business book promises to deliver these in one way or another; why this one in particular? Others hooked onto the idea of inspiration, with myriad variations on images of light bulbs and brains, but again, these are overused and unemotional, with only a tentative link to the topic. A few of you tried to seemingly substitute inspiration with quantity, as if - if I saw a whole lot of different permutations of the same themes with different colors and layouts - something might just jump out at me. A better approach is to capture that good idea first, and then you can always refine it later.

(...continued from above) I sincerely hope that, even for those of you who didn't win the contest, I have been able to provide something of value in return, in the form of my feedback both on individual entries as well as in this general chat. I appreciate very much Noureen's comment below. I have also gained more than I expected through this experience. Besides a wonderful book cover design, I have gained a respect for the difficulty of good graphic design and, broadly, of advertising. In providing feedback to you over the course of the contest, I was also able to refine my own position for how I wanted to sell my book in terms of market positioning and approach. In retrospect, as successful as this process was, I think it could have even been better had I further refined the requirements before posting the contest - but having said that, I am enormously satisfied with the results, and I have all of you contestants to thank for it. Thank you all, and best of luck for the future!

Respected Sir, Thank you for such a great contest! Unlike other contests, this one was different. There were almost more than 300 entries and you provided a sincere feedback to each and every one of them and this is not an easy job. Whenever you commented on a design, you appreciated its positive aspects first before pointing out the problems in it and that was very encouraging for all of us. Obviously only one entry is going to win this contest but one of the most invaluable things for a designer is somebody pointing his/ her mistakes so that he corrects them and improves his skill. I think all of us must have improved our skill in one way or the other after this contest. I hope you find your desired design. Best wishes for your upcoming book. I hope it becomes a top seller when it hits the market! Thank you once again!

Hi everyone, that last few days went by quickly and I am delighted with the participation. I am also in awe of the sheer talent displayed by many of you in coming up with original designs and trying your best to meet a very demanding set of criteria. Thank you all for participating in my contest! Some of the designs I have yet to look at in detail and provide feedback on, but I should be done narrowing my top choices by Sunday or Monday, so you should know where you stand. Just to set expectations, choosing a winner is going to be difficult because I already know there are several that are very good. Thus, I will be looking to friends and family to help me make my final selection.
Expect a final decision in about one week.
Unfortunately I will only be able to choose one entry to be the winner but please note that I may have additional design work in the future and I will be making a list also of my favorites, so the end of this contest doesn't necessarily mean the end...- 3 yıl önce

I want to add a little color to the requirements, as I am seeing a lot of confusion as to what it means to evoke emotion.
First, let me compliment those entrants who have submitted original works - many are IMHO museum-quality pieces and even if I reject them for my book cover, please know that I appreciate the enormous effort and talent it takes to put these together!
With that out of the way, what is the goal of this exercise? The goal is for me sell my book, right? And that is difficult because my target audience doesn't even know that they need Python. With this book, I'm seeking to market an existing "Product" to a new segment of the population that would never on their own think to use this product. The title Business Python points in this direction because it is usually not business people who need Python - it is usually IT people, or data science professionals. (to be continued...)- 3 yıl önce
-
Yarışma Sahibi - 3 yıl önce
(...continued) Why should a business person bother with this? --I answer this in my book, but the answer requires more space than a well-written title or subtitle will allow. The back cover of the book is going to contain the proverbial "elevator speech" - the short form answer that will either hook them, or not, depending on the words I write. The front cover needs to COMPEL them to look at the back cover. That's why it's not enough to have a work of art, or something hinting at some kind of amorphous "business success". These aren't compelling. There are a gazillion self-help books out there, a gazillion Business/success books, and a gazillion Python books. I need a potential reader to REACT to the cover in a way that they wouldn't react to any of those others. Good advertising (and the cover is an advertisement, after all) always taps into emotion, not analytics. (to be continued...)

Yarışma Sahibi - 3 yıl önce
(...continued) So how does this work in practice? There is a part of the human experience that is universal. Love, loss, grief, hope, ambition, lust, joy, tenderness, surprise, humor, disappointment, fear, etc.. Good advertising taps into these. I have a book "Ogilvy on Advertising" in my hand with some great examples from the past. Page 119: a sad-looking boy of about 7 or 8 clutches a broken baseball, and on the other side of the page, a short article on "how to get your money back at Sears". Emotional. The next page has a beautiful woman wearing a fur coat and smiling broadly, looking at the camera with a look that just says "THANK YOU I LOVE IT" and a short article on "how to buy mink at Sears for Christmas". Think of the Marlboro man - a rough, tough cowboy whose image conjurs up (or did for its original audience) fond memories of watching heros and villians duke it out in classic Western films, or memories of spending time in the open air. (to be continued...)

Yarışma Sahibi - 3 yıl önce
(...continued) How about this Dove soap ad from page 72 of Ogilvy: a woman is talking on the phone while taking a bubble bath, a blissful look on her face, and the copy: "Darling, I'm having the most extraordinary experience... I'm head over heals in DOVE!" Or page 73, where an old ad for a VW Beetle just has a picture of the car and the word "Lemon" (a word for an absolutely worthless car) - then in small text explains the stringent quality control processes that the cars undergo at the factory and why this near-perfect car was held back. No one would read about quality control if that were all there were. It is the surprise at having a negative word being used there that COMPELS the casual glancer that he must read on. In the same vein, page 71 has a picture of a can of soup being poured into a drinking glass with ice (a new use for an old product, sound familiar?) and text to explain what additional condiments can be added to make a delicious summer drink. (to be continued...)

-
Yarışma Sahibi - 3 yıl önce
(...continued) None of the above examples are 1:1 applicable here for my book cover, but should give you an idea of what I am looking for, and what I mean by evoking emotion and COMPELLING the casual glancer to read further, and I hope this will comfort those of you who have submitted excellent designs which I have rejected (or will reject) for lack of emotion. Forget the quantity / variations-on-a-theme approach. If you have the winning idea, I am happy to pay you an hourly wage afterward to refine the design further if needed. What this contest is about is that factor that COMPELS the glancer to read more, even if he has no interest in Python whatsoever. Give me the best design that does that, and you will have won the contest. (Done.)

I'm posting here some extended comments on what I'm looking for, and will post the segments in reverse order so you can more easily read from top to bottom. Even if you are unsure whether to submit additional entries, I would encourage you to read through these comments... if you learn this well, you can set yourself apart from other graphic designers when doing book covers, flyers, printed ads, etc.

I'm not looking (just) for technical excellence, but for inspiration. Something that is appropriate to the topic, but that brings people to laugh, to smile, to reminisce about a good memory (for example). Something deeply compelling in itself, even if they have no prior interest in Python. It's a tough challenge, I know. But I also know that some of you are up for it!

I think what I proposed evoked the emotions but I think mystery the most thing plus the surprise when you think its a fiction book but its not its programming.

I'm going to repost some feedback here that I recently gave to one of the entrants: Hi ..., thank you for all your entries. You really do some good stuff. Each one looks like a very professional business book that I see regularly being sold. I would know - I have read dozens of them! Unfortunately, that's the problem. Every business book out there promises success in one's career, if only they would read that book. There is nothing wrong with this per se, but that means that differentiating my book requires something special. Now, I think I have written something special that people will see when they start reading, but getting people to start reading is the trick. The cover needs to pique their interest enough to start, first with the back cover, then with the front matter. To do this I need the cover to evoke emotion. Any by the way, my target audience doesn't know that they need Python, so just from the title, they aren't likely to pick this book up. This is the challenge.

This is not just about design, it is about marketing. My target market for this is composed of white collar office workers who daily use Excel, PowerPoint and Word and who have never considered using Python to solve their problems. These people are often frustrated by the divide between Business and IT in large organizations, or frustrated with the technical limitations of their tools, but know of no alternative within their grasp. They may have tried programming in VBA or maybe took a course in C or Java many years ago, but they don't consider any of that relevant for doing their jobs. They can't see what I can see, what I have lived in my own career, that after learning just a little bit of Python (while still far from being experts), they can make their lives so much easier. My book will open their eyes, if only I can capture their attention long enough to open it. And that's the point of this contest.

Hello everyone, sorry for the delay. I am going through all the entries carefully and I aim to have feedback on everything (that has been submitted until now) by tonight. As a general note, please bear in mind that what is important for me (besides that the technical requirements are met) is that the front cover should evoke an emotional response. Can your design pique their interest even if they have no predisposed interest toward Python? Can your design make them laugh, and wonder what in the world this book is really about? Can it engender a feeling of hope, or give them courage? Can it evoke pleasant memories of a carefree childhood? Can it even make them mad somehow (hopefully not at the author), so that they just have to know what is in there? This kind of emotion can help differentiate my book from the gazillion business books and gazillion Python books already on the market.

Dear all, thank you for the hard work you have already put into the entries. From what I have seen, there are already some good ones. Just to set expectations, I want you to know that I won’t be too quick on the trigger here. I intend to let this contest go for a while before accepting the winning entry. I purposefully set a 10 day contest period because this is creative work and I want you to have time to be inspired.
Also, I aim to provide feedback on every entry but I’m not going to be able to get to all the existing entries until Saturday. If I haven’t gotten to yours yet, rest assured I will.
Perhaps a general comment- please read the full requirements before starting your design. There seem to be a few ready-fire-aim entries in the mix; it’s a contest, not a race!
Again, thank you for your work. This is the first time I am going to freelancer.com for input and I am absolutely impressed with the enormous talent you have!- 3 yıl önce
