Welcome to Phase 2 of the Big Dipper Lunar Regolith Acquisition Challenge! Whether you participated in Phase 1 or are just entering the competition now, we’re thrilled to have you on-board! Phase 2 of this challenge, open to existing and new solvers, offers a unique opportunity to build upon the achievements of Phase 1 and further contribute to the success of this ground-breaking Australian rover design.
This phase will seek submissions that concisely summarise unique and creative insights drawn from the winning solutions, judges’ feedback, open testing, and your own research in a visually appealing way. Submissions will be in the form of a one-page infographic illustrating insights and design recommendations for future regolith acquisition systems.

Phase 1 Recap

In Phase 1, we invited solvers to design a Lunar Regolith Sample Acquisition System, a critical component of an Australian lunar rover design tasked with collecting lunar regolith for use in In-situ Resource Utilisation (ISRU) facilities run by NASA.

Phase 2 Background

In Phase 2, we will leverage the knowledge gained from Phase 1 submissions and testing to optimise and refine the way we collect regolith on the Moon.
Our Phase 1 challenge brought forth an impressive array of designs, resulting in the selection of 10 winning solutions. These designs showcased ingenuity, functionality, and adaptability, setting the stage for the next crucial step in refining regolith acquisition technology. Following this, we engaged diverse groups across Australia to participate in putting the winning solutions to the test. Results of this testing will be uploaded in the “Files” tab above.
Outside this challenge, the logistics of collecting lunar regolith have been researched for a number of years, and encompass various considerations, including the impact of extra-terrestrial environments on standard Earth-based collection designs, potential breaking points in functionality, and the unique characteristics of regolith that must be factored into any successful acquisition device. Much of this can be accessed publicly via research platforms such as Google Scholar, or resources provided by NASA.

Scope of the Challenge:

Unlike Phase 1, our focus in this stage is not on the creation of complete designs. Instead, we seek your valuable input to provide recommendations that can be universally applied to any future regolith acquisition device. We encourage you to consider factors such as structural integrity, adaptability to different terrains, redundancy, energy efficiency, and the impact of regolith properties on the functionality and longevity of the device. Phase 2 will require you to consider the testing and judging insights into Phase 1 winning solutions, as well as wider research that is publicly available.

Expectations:

Comprehensive Insight: We are looking for recommendations that go beyond the surface. For Phase 1 winning solutions, consider in depth how each distinct type of design will operate, how the design can be made more redundant, and search for potential issues that may be encountered in real lunar conditions. Ensure that you go beyond simply summarising the testing results and judges’ feedback. Instead, greater weight will be given to submissions that draw deeper insights that can be applied in future.
Practical Applicability: Your recommendations should be applicable to a wide range of scenarios and rover designs. Think about versatility and adaptability when suggesting recommendations and improvements.
Scientific Rigor: Base your recommendations on sound scientific principles and empirical evidence. Consider how your suggestions align with the known properties of regolith and the conditions expected in extra-terrestrial environments.
Clear Communication: Clearly articulate your recommendations, making them accessible to a broad audience, including engineers, scientists, and enthusiasts. Ensure that you do not crowd the infographic with too much text – conciseness is key. In addition, visual aids or diagrams in your infographic should be used to specifically enhance understanding, rather than for aesthetic effect only.

What is needed for Phase 2?

Data Utilisation: The data collected from testing Phase 1 winning designs, along with feedback from our expert panel of judges, will be provided to all participants. You will have the opportunity to engage with this data to derive insights into the most effective elements of the winning designs and identify areas for improvement. Testing data and judges’ feedback will be uploaded in the “Files” tab above.
Research Skills: Showcase your ability to find and summarise relevant research in lunar regolith, engineering and design to provide a clear picture of the state of the art in regolith acquisition.
Design Recommendations: Based on your analysis and research, you will develop a set of Design Recommendations. These recommendations should be communicated by providing clear guidance on best practice in regolith acquisition.

What do you need to submit?

Submission should be in the form of a 1-page infographic, including text and appropriate visuals.
Two important aspects should be included in your infographic: Insights and Design Recommendations.
The infographic should convey insights gathered from your analysis of the Phase 1 winning solutions, results of testing and judging feedback provided, as well as your own research. These should go beyond a simple summary, with your infographic describing insights drawn from this data that can be applied as learnings for future regolith acquisition systems.
The infographic should also include a set of concise recommendations for the design of future regolith acquisition systems. These recommendations should be broad enough to cover a range of different design types, and can be viewed as a guide for designing such systems. The number of recommendations you provide is at your discretion, with quality and clarity weighted higher than quantity.
Both visuals and text should be included in your infographic, and should be included to add value to the insights and recommendations you convey. Text should be large enough to read comfortably, and be very concise.

Submission Deadline: 8 March 2024 11:59pm AEDT
Judging and Evaluation: 9 March 2024 – 29 March 2024
Winners Announcement: 1 April 2024

Hi, just a question about previous competitors / Winners of the phase 1, is it possible for us to have some insight on the design specifications and what the parts were intended to be used for and in what applications. Because my immediate issue is that some of these designs just have a photo that doesn't show its application well or how its designers intended it to be implemented, for example the "Super Dooper Scooper". TLDR: Is there more to these winners work pieces descriptions perhaps?

Are there any requirements regarding the size of the 1-pager (A4 or A3?), minimum font size, preferred font style, page margins, ect? Do we need to include any additional information on our 1-pager (i.e team name, individual names, contact info, associations like University, acknowledgement of country or ASA grant funding scheme, Challenge name, ect? Just trying to figure out how much writing space we have and overall formatting
