Above all else, I am looking for a simple, black and white vectorized logo.
I am what you might call a professional hobbyist. Although it's not yet my day job, I create highly precise mechanical kinetic sculptures, clocks and similar devices out of metal and wood.
I do this using a combination of traditional machinist techniques, as well as modern tools. I work mainly with a lathe and a mill. The work is characterized by a high degree of precision and high quality materials.
To get a good sense of the kind of work I do, you can Google people like Bob Potts. The "Mechanical Art Gallery" in Switzerland is another good source of inspiration.
In terms of the kind of aesthetic I am looking for, something like the Diode Press logo and work ([login to view URL]) is a good example.
The winner of the competition will design what will effectively be the signature/logo. This means it needs to meet a few criteria: it needs to be easily scaled, needs to be monochromatic (black and white), and needs to look good both anywhere from 20mm to 80mm.
Another important consideration is that it can ideally be machined (which means cut or etched in metal and therefore can't have detail too fine that a very small cutter couldn't get into corners). This second consideration is a nice-to-have-- I can work around it, but fine detail won't work.
I am open to a logo that incorporates the tools of the trade, or some notion of craftsmanship. Things like micrometers, lathes, might work well. That said, tools aren't essential. I am looking for a timeless, simple, elegant logo that speak to high-quality work, attention to detail, but without the pretension. This is work made with sweat and tears.
The logo needs to incorporate only my initials (LL) and a year marker, so that I can mark when each piece was made (2016).
Am happy to give feedback, and further direction as required.
