NASA Challenge: Develop an Astronaut Training Display

Underwater Extravehicular Activity (EVA) training needs a visual display for a force/torque sensor. This display will be needed to give real-time feedback to astronauts as they perform complex tasks in the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL).
Training in the NBL is designed to simulate the tasks performed during an EVA on the International Space Station (ISS) in NASA’s current space suit, called the EVA Mobility Unit or EMU. Each task requires imparting forces and torques which must be counter-balanced. In the NBL, as in space, Astronauts find reacting these forces challenging in some of the odd positions required to work on critical ISS hardware. In some cases, differences between training on the ground and what was experienced in space cost very valuable EVA time. For this reason, NASA is constantly trying to improve their training in both reacting and creating new forces. This effort has led to testing the use of underwater force/torque transducers to aid in EVA training. While collecting force and torque data is somewhat straightforward, displaying that information to the Astronaut real-time has room for new innovative ideas. This display method will help to train Astronauts how to better position themselves and produce the correct forces in precisely the correct directions, improving EVA performance. The goal of this contest is to receive innovative display concepts represented using JPG graphics.
• Display 3 dimensions of force applied to a single point (the transducer: [login to view URL])
• Display 3 dimensions of torque applied to a single point (the transducer)
• Use bright color contrasts to be easily visible underwater
• Be easily integrated into LabVIEW
• Have visual indicators which inform user when force/torque inputs are and are not in the correct direction and magnitude (set by instructor)
• Limited or optional numerical displays to be used when needed
• Limited to 10” monitor (resolution: 1024 x 768)
• Cannot include auditory feedback
• Cannot require inputs by underwater viewer (instructor will control)
Basic graphs and numerical displays were initially developed and did not intuitively correspond to actions performed with force constraints. Three example displays are attached, which we feel are NOT intuitive enough.
Winning submissions will be those that are evaluated to
- Meet all of the above requirements
- Meet as many of the stretch requirements as possible
- Provide intuitive feedback for the user
- Clearly display relevant information

“Sergio8888 did an really great job of developing an innovative display for our astronaut torque training task. This was a contest and this design was selected from 160 entries. Sergio8888 came up with a very creative approach to displaying real time torque feedback to help astronauts training in the Neutral Buoyancy Lab with tool alignment. In addition to developing simply the graphical concept, Sergio8888 also developed the fully functioning LabView VI's that really advanced our project further than expected. Sergio8888 was very responsive to our feedback and requests and was really great to work with.”
