NASA Challenge: Develop 3D Models for Robonaut Simulation-EVA Handrail

  • Durum: Closed
  • Ödül: $50
  • Alınan Girdiler: 92
  • Kazanan: miguel3d

Yarışma Özeti

We (NASA) need to develop a number of high resolution 3D models to be used for Robonaut simulations. These 3D models are to be developed based on photographs of real items (see attached files). These simulated objects would be used for various grasp and manipulator testing.

This particular challenge is to build a 3D model of an Extra-Vehicular Activity (EVA or spacewalk) Handrail. There are many handrails placed inside and outside of space station that the astronauts use to push and pull themselves around. This particular handrail has a "dog bone" cross section, which is unique to handrails that are used outside of space station for extra-vehicular tasks. This model will be used in conjunction with our vision software to identify and localize possible grasping locations for R2.

There is a scale in the attached imagery is in inches. All final model submissions must be delivered in on of the following formats: .prt (Solidworks, ProE); .step or .stp; .iges; .stl; .dae. NOTE: Freelancer submissions will need to be image file views of your model. If you win the contest, you will then send/transfer the model files to NASA via email, dropbox, etc.

All entries will be judged on the accuracy, quality, and fidelity (detail) of the model produced. Note that where highly similar top submissions are produced, the submission entered first will win.

Thank you to all of the Freelancers who participated in this challenge. You all demonstrated some amazing work. And I mean truly AMAZING work. This was very difficult to pick a winner from such great submissions. In the judging, we had to go with our original criteria in the brief ("where highly similar top submissions are produced, the submission entered first will win.") Great job Miguel3d! Congratulations!

Ah.... thanks for clarifying. There was a misunderstanding that we had with the Freelancer folks. We thought that we would be able to unseal them all, but it ends up we can only do a poll (which is quite different and not visible to everyone). I'm going to check to see if we can unseal them right before the end of the contest, that may make all of the entries visible. That will only be possible on currently active challenges.

thank you, the projects are increasing w/ complexity w/ more challenges thereby increasing the processing involved to produce these 3d models which is very interesting. Actualizing one 3d modelling software may not be enough since the objects are not exactly mechanical or machine parts; which would've been a lot easier for me w/ SolidWorks, However, I'm seeing myself needing to deploy two other modelling softwares to get the results we need

r@m, thanks for your feedback. We are sorry if we have offended you in some way. Even a little digging will show that we are in fact NASA, but we understand your skepticism. We're not sure we understand your logic that we will somehow get poor results since we've actually had outstanding results and are very happy with what Freelancers have provided. We agree that these are relatively simple projects which is one reason we started with a lower prize amount (although if you look at some of our more recent contests, we have increased the prize amounts based on community feedback). Since this is a study, we are trying to understand the different effects of guaranteed vs. non-guaranteed contest... but we understand that there are community norms on this platform which are quite strong. Again, sorry if we offended you. That was not our intent. If you change your mind about us and decide to compete on one of our upcoming challenges, we welcome your submission.

Hmmm, very hard to follow @rmissin logic, if the assumptions where based on any logic or facts to start off w/. @nasacoeci, has made their references time and time again, the contest is even advertised on the NASA website and on freelancer, do your research @rmissin and confirm your facts are right before you start ranting like a maniac on freelancer, it's really irritating to see a genuine body apologize to you for not doing your homework.

I am going to put on my résumé that I helped design Robonaut. In fact I made contributions to Robonaut, which helps NASA define faulty designs to reject in order to improve astronaut safety with Robonaut in outer space. Hey NASA, what is faulty about design number 100, do you know?

I'm English and we have a very expensive cost of living here. Even a pack of ciggies costs the equivalent of approx $10 - 12. So yes if this is for professional purposes. It is just a little bit under valued. Especially the the scope meter competition.

For a list of our current challenges, see https://www.freelancer.com/contest/challenges/nasa. We will be offering new Robonaut CAD challenges each day for next week (with more/different challenges after that). Please note that NASA's use of these challenges is part of a pilot project to better understand crowd-based challenges, appropriate incentives, and resulting participation & quality. This may result in our posting challenges that have incentives or parameters that are atypical of contests on freelancer. We hope that some members that find these challenges interesting and worth it (to contribute to NASA's efforts or for the chance at monetary reward).

I think this is a great opportunity for NASA outsourcing to freelancers all around the word. You will probably be amazed with the entry's and have that one special design. After all this is for the future of this world and the advancement of Science. I also want to put my two cents in such as others have about the $50. I find people for my project for $30 that do a really awesome job. Now as I see you are NASA and I think that $50 is a little bit to little for an award even if you are testing the waters here. I think at least the minimum should have been $100 and you would have for sure found that golden gem hidden in the last place where anyone would look. Maybe also you can award the winner with the right and logo of some sort to acknowledge that they have worked/been prized with an award with NASA so that it can help the freelancer in the future such as a recognition that will give him/her a huge and I mean huge advancement in employment, even if NASA is not hiring themselves.
