Webinar #1 (July 22, 2021): https://youtu.be/-h6hqQFjLAs

Can you help improve the health of mothers and mothers-to-be? The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is looking to deliver new data solutions to improve pregnancy outcomes. By using a novel analytic approach on data collected from first-time pregnant women in the Nulliparous Pregnancy Outcomes Study: Monitoring Mothers-to-be (nuMoM2b), you might win a share of the NICHD Decoding Maternal Morbidity Data Challenge $400,000 purse and have the chance to advance research to improve maternal health.
To participate in this challenge, you must create an innovative computational solution using the nuMoM2b dataset that could be used to spur new research into maternal morbidity (MM). MM is any physical illness, mental illness, or disability that is directly related to pregnancy and/or childbirth. We seek innovative analytic approaches with the goal of discovering novel and interesting trends, patterns, or relationships within the data. Solutions that specifically address the racial and ethnic disparities in maternal morbidity and mortality are sought to spur new ideas or interventions that impact adversely affected populations in the United States.

To participate in the Challenge, follow the instructions in the Challenge Registration Guidelines (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1U5DteH9Vk25kIulzovm0QF3JzCtAbkDl/view?usp=sharing).

CHALLENGE OVERVIEW
The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD)’s mission is to lead research and training to understand human development, improve reproductive health, enhance the lives of children and adolescents, and optimize abilities for all. In support of this mission, NICHD conducted the Nulliparous Pregnancy Outcomes Study: Monitoring Mothers-to-be (nuMoM2b) to study women for whom pregnancy will lead to their first delivery (nulliparous). Because these women have not given birth before, there is no prior data on how they respond to pregnancy, so potential adverse pregnancy outcomes are less predictable. The data collected from this study provides better insight into pregnancy complications without prior risk assignment or interventions. Over 10,000 racially, ethnically, and geographically diverse women participated in the study. The women were followed from 6 weeks into their pregnancy through delivery. Data were collected through several means including interviews, self-administered questionnaires, clinical measurements, chart abstractions, and biological specimens. In addition, several add-on studies were conducted on subsets of the women.

NICHD is looking for innovative data approaches to the nuMoM2b dataset that can identify new areas of research on maternal morbidity and severe maternal morbidity. The NICHD Decoding Maternal Morbidity Data Challenge seeks new ways of analyzing the nuMom2b data using computational analysis, data mining, or unique learning approaches to identify factors that impact maternal morbidity and severe maternal morbidity so that clinicians can more quickly and accurately identify and treat pregnancy-related conditions and prevent severe illness or death for a pregnant person. Maternal morbidity has been defined by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as “any health condition attributed to and/or complicating pregnancy and childbirth that has a negative impact on the woman's wellbeing and/or functioning.”

This challenge will last 5.5 months from the launch to the awarding of the prizes. Solvers will have about 4 months to analyze the nuMoM2b data and submit a data solution and documentation. Data solutions must be uploaded to GitHub and a completed submission form must be uploaded to the Challenge webpage. There are no boundaries to the type of solution, but it must use the nuMoM2b dataset, be innovative, and have the potential to improve the lives of pregnant women and mothers. Comparison data sets can be used for analyses, but no attempt should be made to append data directly to the nuMoM2b dataset or identify study participants.

Potential solutions should focus on drawing new or interesting associations from the nuMoM2b data that could inspire further research and intervention studies. Solutions could use established, new, or combinations of techniques to discover innovative outcomes. For example, techniques such as regression analysis, association rule learning, classification trees or clustering, frequency or cardinality, machine learning, or more could be used on their own or in combination to create innovative correlations, associations, and inspirations.

Solutions will be judged on the approach, impact, innovation, applicability and whether they address at-risk populations. Highly ranked solutions will also be judged on reproducibility and robustness of the technique(s) or model(s), which may include detailed code, input, and output inspection of the files in GitHub. Up to seven prizes of $50,000 will be awarded to the solutions judged the best according to the judging rubric. Up to five additional prizes of $10,000 will be awarded to winning solutions that address populations that are overly impacted by maternal morbidity and mortality, in particular women from at-risk racial and ethnic groups.

While not part of the judging criteria, NICHD encourages applications from a diverse range of problem solvers as diverse teams generate innovative ideas and distinct perspectives. The NICHD welcomes participation from groups including, but not limited to, teams from Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Minority Serving Research Institutions, Women-owned and disadvantaged small businesses, Community based research organizations, and other organizations and entities not traditionally engaged in NIH funded research. Please refer to the NIH notice of interest in diversity for more information (https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-20-031.html)

SOLUTION REQUIREMENTS
Your solution must be a new, innovative data solution using the nuMoM2b dataset that finds new associations that might drive research in MM.
Your solution should look for new discoveries that address populations that are overly impacted by MM and mortality; in particular, the solution should address women from at-risk racial and ethnic groups.
Your solution cannot use additional datasets outside of the nuMoM2b dataset.
IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ THE FULL CHALLENGE BRIEF THAT CONTAINS ALL THE CHALLENGE AND SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS AND RULES (https://drive.google.com/file/d/16fR6KTgR8s2Csz7p9dsD177Zn1_94ztY/view?usp=sharing)

PRIZES
Total prize purse: $400,000

$50,000 prizes will be awarded to up to seven data solutions that score the highest according to the judges’ rubric. Up to five additional prizes of $10,000 will be awarded to winning solutions that address maternal morbidity in at-risk racial and ethnic groups.
In addition to the prize purse, winners will be given the opportunity to present their solution at a symposium.

PAYMENT OF THE PRIZE: Prizes will be awarded by NICHD directly to the winners outside the freelancer.com platform. The prizes will be paid by electronic funds transfer and may be subject to Federal income taxes. All payments will be made to U.S. bank accounts only. HHS/NIH will comply with the Internal Revenue Service withholding and reporting requirements, where applicable.
NICHD reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to (a) cancel, suspend, or modify the Challenge, or any part of it, for any reason, and/or (b) not award any prizes if no submissions are deemed worthy.

CHALLENGE SUBMISSIONS
Each team must submit the Challenge Registration Form, upload the Submission Form on the Challenge website, and upload their data solution to GitHub. Instructions for the data upload are included in the Submission Form.

Before you continue in the Challenge, read the Challenge Registration Guidelines (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1U5DteH9Vk25kIulzovm0QF3JzCtAbkDl/view?usp=sharing). You must complete the Challenge Registration Form before you can access the dataset in DASH.
Note: A team or individual may submit more than one solution to the challenge. However, each submission must be a substantially different solution. For example, the solutions might look at different comorbidities or create completely different data solutions. You will have the opportunity to explain the differences between your solutions. If the solutions are determined to be too similar, only the most recently submitted or updated solution will be considered.

All submissions must be written in English and cannot be handwritten.

    Dear Jack of NICHD,

It is totally understandable that you are abiding by the rules. You mentioned that "already extended the limitations", but to what limit?

In clear words, is it possible for participation from anywhere outside US?

    Thanks,

Due to the sensitive nature of the numom2b dataset provided, each Team Leader must be an US permanent resident or citizen and affiliated with an US institution in order to access the data on DASH. We understand this will make participation difficult for some interested parties but since the Challenge deals with restricted data - the NICHD has already extended the limitations as fully as they could after consultation with their Office of General Counsel

    Hi everyone,

We had a couple of questions come in via the Office Hours Slido:
    1) Will you allow solutions that also address prediction of pediatric outcomes?
    2) Please clarify the policy on publications from this analysis. Will only the winning solutions be allowed to publish or all scientifically sound solutions?

    Answers as follows:
Question 1- No - this challenge is looking predictions of maternal morbidity.
Question 2- Participants are allowed to publish their findings, regardless of winning the prize or not.

Hi Mish. To put it simply, because the dataset is medical data, liability for misuse of the data is a big concern for NICHD. Therefore, participants must be affiliated with an US institution because if there is any misuse of the data, NICHD will hold that institution liable. They will not be able to do so for institutions outside of the US. Thus, these rules are already as relaxed as NICHD could allow for this Challenge. Again, if you would still like to participate, your best option would be to join a team with a Team Leader who must be an US permanent resident or citizen and affiliated with an US institution in order to access the data on DASH.

      Hi,

It will be hard for us to join a team from US as there will be trust issues. Cause even if the team wins due to my effort there can be possible conflicts regarding sharing the prize. So this will not be feasible as there is no guarantee that once they won the contest the team leader from US will share that prize with us also.
Moreover I don't know how to join a team from US or how to find one!

I suggest a best alternative to prepare an NDA or a different legal document (like that from concord.com or something similar) and get is signed from participating contestants. Once signed you can give the contestants access to the dataset.
This way you can ensure participation from all over the world.

Please escalate this concern to appropriate NICHD team member and make relaxations to the requirements.

Hi Karim, as per the eligibility criteria, if you are participating singly or as a Team Leader, you must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States. However, non-U.S. citizens and non-permanent residents can participate as a member of a team with a Team Leader that is a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.

If instead you are participating on behalf of a private entity, the entity must be incorporated in and maintain a primary place of business in the United States.

All payments will be made to U.S. bank accounts only.

    Dear @poweredbyFLN,

Instead of you giving reference to the doc / brief why can't you just first understand the requirements and then answer the questions when asked here in the comment section. I feel it like bad to point us to such a big document and to learn the requirements from there. Instead you do that just let us know when we have doubts.

Please don't paste that same link to the brief doc over and over under comments asked here. Instead resolve those queries.

Also we would like to communicate directly with the real NICHD team & not someone hired (or a freelancer staff)!

    Thanks.

Stop repeating the same comment over and over. Do something unique. Just answer our queries, please.
