Provide a technology plan & cost estimate for a mobile app

Contest Brief

We are in the very initial planning stages for a mobile app.

We would like for you to provide a plan for the technology you feel would be best suited to create this app and a rough cost estimate of what you would charge to develop this type of app.

We have ideas on how we think this project should be approached, but we would like to hear your ideas. This is simply a feasibility study, but your responses could better position you to win a bid for the project when we decide to move to development. (We are committed to this project, so it WILL move to development.)

We will award the top entry a $100 prize. Our decision will be based on thoroughness and thoughtfulness. Give us the best plan and the best supported plan. (For example, you saying that you have experience with jQuery Mobile is NOT support for why jQuery Mobile is best for this project!) IF YOU WISH TO KEEP YOUR PROPOSAL PRIVATE, JUST SUBMIT AN ENTRY TO THE CONTEST ASKING US TO MESSAGE YOU. WE WILL CONTACT YOU AND YOU CAN SEND US YOUR PROPOSAL THROUGH PM.

The App will be a tool for providing real-time feedback/ratings between individuals. As such, it will depend heavily on interactivity with a database and extensively utilize push notifications. It will be deployed on iOS devices and Android devices. Ideally it could be accessed online as well. Speed is important as is simplicity. Please look at the attached overview and potential menu structures for more perspective:
At a minimum, please include the following in your plan:

1) What tools (languages, databases, IDE’s, etc.) you would recommend to develop each aspect of the project and why you think your recommendation is the best approach. We are not coders, so be simplistic in your explanations. Assume we know very little.

2) What are the phases of programming development you would recommend and the order of key tasks within each phase. (It is not necessary to provide a UML sketch, but it may prove helpful.) Additionally, please povide a reasonable expectation of how long each phase should take to complete. (It would be helpful if you could also break down your cost estimate into phases.)

3) What technology obstacles do you foresee with this project? How would you approach these obstacles?

4) What would be your cost estimate to develop the entirety of the project? (This is an estimate and NOT a bid that you would be held to, but it should be reflective of the type of bid you would be willing to make. )

5) What ongoing costs do you see to maintain this app?

6) There is a good chance we will NOT distribute the App through traditional stores (the AppStore or GogglePlay). Do you have any recommendations or experiences elsewhere?

7) Anything else you think would help us scope out this project and distinguish yourself as the winner.

Good luck and feel free to ask questions. We will answer to the best of our abilities.

Thank you to everyone who said they want to participate. The contest is now closed to new entrants. However several entrants have asked for a little time in sending over documents/plans. I will allow 48 hours for you to get those in. After all docs are in, I will review and notify the winner within a few days. Let me know if you have any questions.

It appears I have done a poor job explaining this contest. Here is how you can win. Read the app description and the three documents attached to the contest. Develop a technology plan. In this plan you should address HOW and WHY you would build MY APP. For example: would you go native or HTML 5? But your answer should be based around MY NEEDS. (Given the fact that the user interacts so frequently with the database I would recommend....) If you don't understand the app after studying the documents, then get a hold of me (see below) and let me know your questions. I have had several people just say...I would use jquery, etc. but what I am looking for is...I have studied your app and because you want to do XX then I would recommend we do such and such. Show me you understand the app and that is why you are recommending the plan you are. Hopefully that is helpful. Good luck.

Hi, I have done a design brief for you...not 100 sure what you are after here other than you have an app that you want to be able to rate other people? the brief has been written in word so are you able to PM me or something so I can send it? Or were you just after the GUI interface designs?

I have been very disappointed the responses to this contest. IF YOU WANT THE $100 PROVIDE A THOUGHTFUL AND THOROUGH TECHNOLOGY PLAN AND AN ESTIMATE/RANGE of how much you think an app like what I have outlined will cost. There is only ONE DAY left. This is a guaranteed contest and right now it would talk almost no effort to win. If you want to keep your plan private, just enter the contest without providing a plan and I will PM you and you can send me your plan that way.

Please feel free to make a thorough and thoughtful submission to this contest. We are not hiring for this job right now. We are offering a contest whereby people can submit their ideas on how we should approach this app.

I'll recommend 2 native applications one for Android and one for iOS with an MSSQL C# .Net Website exposing JSON REST Services to both apps. I'll use Xcode and IntelliJ to build the apps and Visual Studio with SQL Management Studio to build the website.

The mobile platforms are constantly changing which is why I think writing native applications is the best approach to keep as close to change as possible. Using some third party cross platform solution might cost alot of maintenance in the long run or even a re-write. The apps should have their own SQL lite databases to store information offline and that can be accomplished. The native platforms will give you full power over the latest device features and upgrading your applications to newer versions will be easier.
