Sourcing goods in China entails many risks for U.S. companies:
You’re reading this right now because you most likely know or have heard about all the factors that could go wrong when sourcing products from China. To combat this, you’re trying to educate yourself about the potential dangers that could arise during your journey. I commend you for that, you’re already minimizing your risk exceptionally. Knowing that many transactions don’t result in the desired outcome, let’s uncover the plethora of reasons behind why, as well as various steps you can take to increase your chances for a win win situation.
China manufacturing and poor quality often go hand in hand. Although quality has definitely improved over the years, it’s still a major concern for buyers. To avoid receiving poor quality products that you’re too embarrassed to even sell, order samples, audit your supplier & perform third quality inspection. Also check for up to date certifications and licenses. This will greatly decrease your chance of having poor quality products. If you cannot afford to take extra measures to ensure quality, then you’ve most likely found the wrong products anyways for numerous reasons.
Along with this, if something goes wrong or the products do not meet your standards or requirements, it’s extremely difficult to enforce contracts… That’s assuming you did have one in place. The legal enforcement options in China are not quite the same as the U.S.. In order to protect yourself the best you can and at least have a chance of recouping your losses, know what your contract, also known as PO (purchase order).
Many sellers often run into issues when it comes time to make their payment. Often times, a supplier may attempt to earn trust and persuade a new seller to put down a larger deposit. For instance, suppliers will offer discounts when you put a large deposit down & can sometimes disappear and run off with your money. Although, as discussed, you can avoid this if you vet suppliers ahead of time and pay through safe payment methods. If they convince you to pay them through a western union or wire transfer, that’s often a red flag! Do not fall for this.
Finding the right partners will make or break your business:
This is entirely the reason why I chose to focus my efforts on helping other sellers identify & weed out the good suppliers from the bad. There are numerous ways you can qualify your supplier. Here is a depth walkthrough or ‘checklist’ of steps you can take.
Not only should you qualify your supplier, but all the partners you're debating on working with.
The partners, resources and relationships that you obtain will either hold you back or contribute to your success. Unfortunately, if you're just starting out, you may not have any relationships built quite yet. To overcome this redundant issue that can force sellers to lose hope, we’re giving our partner's contact information away! Some of these relationships have taken us over a decade to cultivate. With this, you can jumpstart your personal relationship with these trusted partners as soon as possible! This alone can save you an abundant amount of money and time.
Anyways, if you aren't willing to spend some money to further audit and qualify their p, be prepared to lose a lot. One test order could be a couple hundred, while an actual order could cost a couple thousand. It's way better to lose some money in the beginning by finding out they aren’t an aqduate supplier, rather than spending triple by rushing into a partnership and realizing they weren't the smartest choice. Your call.
