Brand Identity Design – Retail Plant Program (Canada-Focused, Female Audience)

We are looking for an experienced brand designer to develop a complete visual identity system for a new national plant program called Northern Roots™.

This is not just a logo project.
This is a retail brand system that must perform in-store.

About Us

We are Pan American Nursery Products, a Canadian wholesale nursery supplier with over 65 years of experience. We supply major retailers including Canadian Tire, Home Depot, and Walmart.

We are evolving from a traditional supplier into a category leader in curated plant programs, and this project is a key step in that transformation.

The Project

Northern Roots™ is a Canadian-grown plant program built around one simple idea:

HARDY PERENNIALS – FOR CANADIAN GARDENS

The program includes:
• Roses
• Flowering perennials
• Shrubs / grasses
• Vines and clematis
• Edibles (fruiting perennials)

What We Need Designed

1. Logo & Logotype
• Primary horizontal logo
• Secondary badge / stacked version
• Black & white versions
• Must be clean, scalable, and retail-ready

2. Retail Banner
• Size: 4” H x 48” W
• This sits on top of plant racks in-store
• Must be highly visible, simple, and impactful from a distance

3. Soil Tag
• Size: 3” H x 4.5” W x 9”L (see attached)
• This sits inside plant pots
• Must be simple, and impactful

Design Direction (Important)

We are trying to hit a very specific balance:

The brand should feel:
• Natural, but not rustic
• Soft, but not overly feminine
• Premium, but not luxury
• Canadian, but not cliché or overly patriotic

Target Audience:
• ~90% female
• Primarily Gen X (core) and Boomers, with growing Millennial interest

Design must feel:
• Approachable
• Trustworthy
• Calm and confident
• Timeless (not trendy)

Visual Guidance:
• Subtle botanical influence (not busy illustrations)
• Clean typography (highly legible in retail)
• Organic elements like roots, vines, or growth lines (used sparingly)
• Canadian influence (maple leaf or similar, used subtly)

Cultural Sensitivity:

We are open to subtle Indigenous-inspired design influence, but this must be:
• Respectful
• Nature-based (linework, balance, form)
• Not literal or appropriated

What This Is NOT
• Not a decorative floral logo
• Not a corporate agriculture brand
• Not a busy illustration system

We are building:

A simple, scalable brand that still feels alive and connected to plants

What Success Looks Like
• Instantly readable in a garden centre
• Feels trustworthy and easy to shop
• Clearly communicates “this will grow here” (in Canada)
• Appeals strongly to a female audience
• Works across signage, tags, and retail displays

Who We’re Looking For

You should have experience in:
• Retail branding
• Packaging design
• Consumer product systems

You should understand:
• Designing for real-world environments (not just screens)
• How people make decisions in-horticulture

Final Note

We are not looking for the cheapest option.
We are looking for the right designer to build a long-term brand system.

If this project is successful, there will be additional work.

See attached concepts we like.

CH, you need to watch out, most entries are going to be AI generated, 99% AI, these scammers will literally post HUNDREDS of AI images each but you can spot them, watch out for them dropping all entries super fast. Keep in mind a solid design takes time to create, so multiple different entries in a row is impossible. The easiest way to spot them is typing their name into 'Search Entries' so you can see their pattern of spamming and how fast they are posting entries. ALWAYS SEARCH NAMES. I can not stress this enough, every single entry you like the look of, SEARCH NAME.

    ALSO PLEASE NOTE!!!

AI-generated images lack copyright protection, permitting any third party to copy the design and could lead to future legal disputes over ownership or usage rights.

You’re not building a logo, you’re building a decision system at shelf level and that shift is where most brands fail. Northern Bloom has to feel instantly trustworthy, quietly premium, and unmistakably “this will grow here” within seconds.

I’d approach this by designing for distance first, then detail. A clean, confident logotype with subtle botanical structure, supported by a system that scales seamlessly from a 48” banner down to a small plant tag without losing clarity. The visual language would use restrained organic elements and a calm palette to guide the eye, not decorate it.

For your audience, the key is emotional reassurance over visual noise. Everything should feel easy, familiar, and dependable while still elevated.

I’ve worked on retail-facing systems where visibility, legibility, and shopper psychology drive the design, not trends. Happy to share a quick direction or sketch on how I’d balance simplicity with botanical storytelling for Northern Bloom.
