Updated Sword Entry

Hi there, this is the updated entry for the sword design. I considered that the end of the foam is a semicircle. I think that what makes the end of the sword look incoherent to the others is the rectangular sheet covering it. In this design, the tip and edge is just a single stitch, although some additional stitches are needed. I included a photo of the suggested sewing instruction for your reference. I also included a photo of what the end should look like when the stitches are done. (It's hard to place images in these types of surfaces so I didn't provide a render but it should be clear from the images) Let me know if this is better visually or if I managed to solve your issue. I'm more than willing to work on it more to make it work. Thanks.

Hi - I wanted to let you know that I gave it a shot. It was a little unclear to me the directions so I just tried it multiple ways.

First I folded it in half and cut out the red areas.

If I sewed it so that the blue lines was continuous, what ends up happening is that there are four layers of fabric stacked on top of each other and the narrowing is excessively dramatic.

If I just sewed it in one continuous curve while sewing the red lines too, the end product has a dramatic narrowing as opposed to the semicircular tip that currently exists.

Although it was a rapid prototype, I think the end result seems to be unlikely to be successful unless I misunderstood the directions.

Thank you for your entry though.

Alright, here is what I will do. I have a few spare fabrics from the previous versions. I'll try to cut one out along this particular template. If it works, I'll come back and figure out a way to award you.

The foam on the sword tip is semi-circular, not rectangular. The picture you are looking at was the first version where we didn't have any solution at all for the tip. A picture of the second version was uploaded a few days later.

With that being said, the more I've thought about it, the more I think it might not work. I'll give it a shot though and get back to you!

*note, since this requires some work on my end it might be a few days before I can get around to it. For the sewing, is it the triangles, then one single stitch across the entire perimeter? It kind of looks like multiple layers may get stuck on top of each other once sewn together, but its worth a try!

This has reached above my knowledge. I've sent it to someone who knows more than me for their opinion and will get back to you. Thank you!

Hi there, thanks for your and your friend's feedback. I understand the geometry comment of your friend. My idea was that the seam at the tip should follow the semi-circular profile when fitted. The cloth downwards from the tip has some tension in it so the foam should conform a bit, making it curved (much like how the sides of the sword in your photo are circular despite the foam having a rectangular profile). The puckering, however, is quite complicated. Since there is just a single seam on top, there should be less puckering on the tip in exchange for some buckling on the sides due to the additional stitches. Also, it would seem that it should be easier to sew the "blue lines" in the instruction first before sewing the remaining "open" parts (red lines will look like two holes by now so they can be closed by matching the lines together).

I also favor paper crafts more but I know some basic sewing. I'm not a professional in that area in any way but I am intrigued by the challenge posed by your project and I came up with this. Please give this a bit more consideration as I think it could just work. I can also tweak it as needed.
