Contest Brief
I'm looking for an engaging visual that shows the dance of mind-body-spirit replicators – the interplay of genes, memes, and lumenes in co-evolutionary spirals.
(background)
Let's assume that Mind-Body-Spirit pervades the universe.
Already, it's widely recognized already that bodies spread genes (form replicators) and minds spread memes (idea replicators). Memes and genes interact to create beings that are able to physically reproduce and to process information about their lives in useful ways. The living beings then pass the replicators on to future generations (more on this http://is.gd/coevolve).
If Spirit is also to thrive, Spirit needs replicators as well. Let’s call them lumenes – replicable patterns of emotional response/felt experience.
We can imagine a universe in which they are equally out for reproductive success, in a co-evolutionary dance with idea replicators and form replicators.
I'm not suggesting that any of the replicators lack a physical, cognitive, or valuing aspect.
Rather, I’m suggesting that each kind presents one primary aspect when interacting with others.
In the case of lumenes (emo replicators), material form and information content are not what they principally bring to the co-evolutionary dance. Their value-add is valuing – they are what enable the entities that spread them to experience flavors of feeling.
Similarly, memes – idea viruses – inherently have physical aspect as information bits, and even have valuing aspects (e.g. preferences via positive/negative charge). But their notable role is to pass on generative scripts through symbolic codes.
Genes, too, embody information codes and valences (molecular-level valuing), but their main business is as a kit for building physical lattices for the triadic coevolutionary spirals of the replicators to keep going.
My hope is that a visual or animation will be able show the interaction of these three kinds of replicators in a co-evolutionary spiral – ideally, one that shows them evolving living beings to further sow the seeds of Mind, Body, and Spirit.

(cont.) All of us have been helped and/or inspired by individuals who have gone beyond narrow self-interest to form a higher sense of self. Such extended selves manifest and spread what we value as admirable qualities of spirit.
What if they (and we) are beings formed to advance "selfish virtues" ¬– qualities of spirit that seek reproductive success?
E.O. Wilson and others argue that selfish genes (form replicators) and selfish memes (idea replicators) lead us to make sacrifices to ensure their reproductive success.
What if there are three, rather than two, kinds of replicators interacting in a co-evolutionary way?
Selfish virtues (“lumenes”) are qualities of spirit that can replicate through many life forms. Their existence may explain why individuals expand their boundaries of caring to include acts of sacrifice to help others who may have not have any genetic (or memetic) relationship.
The existence of such lumenes could explain much of the attachment we feel for noble spirits despite ethnic or intellectual differences – and the emotional pull that we feel when we see acts of kindness and courage in other species.
