I have placed the full brief here: Submission: Tuesday, 17 June 2026, by 23:59 Format: Digital submission via Email (MS Word or PDF) Citation: MLA 9th edition throughout INSTRUCTIONS Students must choose ONE of the two essay questions below and submit a single essay by the deadline. Both questions carry equal weight and will be assessed according to the same criteria: quality of argument, engagement with course readings, correct use of literary terminology, proper integration of secondary sources, and accurate MLA citation. – Read both questions carefully before choosing. – Your essay must be written in continuous academic prose — not in note or bullet-point form. – All sources must be cited in MLA 9th edition style, with a full Works Cited page at the end. – Use at least the minimum number of secondary sources specified in your chosen question. – Plagiarism — including unacknowledged paraphrase — will result in a failing grade for the assignment. All submitted work is checked for academic integrity. – Font: Times New Roman or Georgia, 12pt. Line spacing: 1.5 or double. Margins: 2.5 cm on all sides. ESSAY QUESTION 1 Essay Question 1 — Close Reading, Philology, and Research Erich Auerbach opens “Philology and Weltliteratur” (1952) by insisting that the literary scholar must always begin from a concrete Ansatzpunkt (point of departure) — a single passage, image, or moment in a text — before moving outward toward larger historical and cultural meaning. Using Auerbach’s concept of the Ansatzpunkt as your methodological starting point, select one short passage (prose, poetry, or dramatic speech) from any text studied or independently chosen this semester and write a research essay that moves from close formal analysis of that passage to a broader argument about the work as a whole. Your essay must: – demonstrate close reading of your chosen passage, using at least four literary terms drawn from Peck & Coyle's How to Study Literature (e.g. tone, irony, imagery, point of view, narrative voice, dramatic irony); – situate the passage within its generic context — novel, poem, play, or non-fiction prose — drawing on the genre analysis practised in Weeks 3, 4, and 10; – incorporate a minimum of three secondary sources – include a clearly stated thesis, a structured argument, and a brief concluding reflection on what research sources added to your reading that close reading alone could not provide; – follow MLA 9th edition citation style throughout, including in-text citations and a full Works Cited page. Suggested length: 1,000 – 1,800 words ASSESSMENT CRITERIA Both questions will be assessed on the following criteria: – Clarity and originality of thesis and argument – Quality of close reading and use of literary terminology (Nicolas Marsh; Peck & Coyle) – Effective integration and evaluation of secondary sources – Accuracy and consistency of MLA citation – Academic prose/essay style, structure, and coherence COURSE BIBLIOGRAPHY (REQUIRED READINGS) Auerbach, Erich. “Philology and Weltliteratur.” Translated by Edward Said and Maire Said. The Centennial Review, vol. 13, no. 1, Winter 1969, pp. 1–17. Marsh, Nicholas. How to Begin Studying English Literature. Palgrave Macmillan, 1987. Peck, John, and Martin Coyle.
