Project MARS is a large-scale cultural data annotation initiative. Contributors review and annotate AI-generated responses to ensure they accurately reflect authentic Japanese cultural and personal values. Your work directly helps train Large Language Models such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude to respond in culturally appropriate ways. WHAT YOU'LL DO: Each session consists of two stages: Stage 1 — Questionnaire Survey (~30 minutes) - Complete three validated surveys covering your demographics, personal value priorities, and cultural identity Stage 2 — Cultural Value Annotation (~150 minutes, minimum 12 annotation sets) - Select culturally relevant topics reflecting current Japanese norms - Articulate and rank 3–5 cultural value principles per topic - Create, select, or refine value-related questions (all three types must be used in balanced proportion) - Review and annotate AI-generated responses from both a cultural perspective (mainstream Japanese values) and a personal perspective (your own values) - These two perspectives must be kept strictly and completely separate at all times SESSION STRUCTURE: - Minimum: 12 completed annotation sets within 2.5 hours - Maximum session length: 3.5 hours (time beyond 3.5 hours is non-billable) - Tasks are released on a first-come, first-served basis - Platform: Value Compass Annotation Platform PAY RATE & BILLING - Rate: USD $10.00 per hour - Pay cycle: 20th of each month to the 19th of the following month - Payment issued 15 to 25 days after the end of month work completed in a given cycle. For example: 50 hours between 20th June and 19th July. Paymenrt released 15th to the 25th of August. QUALITY STANDARDS Contributors are assessed against a four-tier quality system: - Gold (100% accuracy) — Priority task access - Silver (97–98%) — Regular task access - Bronze (90–94%) — Under review / rework required - Below Bronze (below 90%) — Removal from project Continuous quality checks and random sampling will be applied throughout. Incorrect or non-compliant annotations must be reworked without additional compensation. IMPORTANT — ANTI-FRAUD POLICY The following are strictly prohibited and will result in immediate removal and forfeiture of payment: - Use of AI tools, auto-complete, or any automated annotation aid - Copy-pasting content from external sources - Annotations that do not reflect genuine human judgment - Only manual, human-based annotation is permitted. WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR: - Native-level proficiency in Japanese (Japan) — written and spoken - Deep, genuine knowledge of current Japanese cultural values and social norms - Ability to clearly separate cultural perspectives from personal perspectives - Strong critical thinking and attention to consistency - Able to work independently and remotely without supervision - Familiarity with LLMs such as ChatGPT is helpful but not required HOW TO APPLY: Please submit a blind CV — do not include your phone number, email address, or any social media profiles or handles. Your proposal should include: - A summary of your Japanese cultural background and relevant experience - Your available hours per week - Confirmation that you are a native Japanese speaker currently residing in Japan - Only qualified applicants will be contacted.

I am a native Japanese speaker currently residing in Tama, Tokyo, Japan. I have many years of professional experience working with Japanese individuals, companies, workplace practices, and administrative systems. My work often requires me to distinguish between my own personal opinions and objective standards such as Japanese laws, social norms, workplace expectations, and established practices. I am comfortable reviewing content carefully, following detailed guidelines, and making consistent judgments based on context and specific criteria. I am also familiar with LLMs such as ChatGPT and understand the importance of identifying cultural nuance and context in AI-generated responses. I can begin reviewing project materials immediately and can commit approximately 6 hours per week for the actual annotation work. I confirm that I am a native Japanese speaker currently residing in Japan. Regarding the hourly rate, I entered USD $12.00 per hour because I understood that the project rate is USD $10.00 per hour, and after Freelancer’s service fee is deducted, my net payment would be approximately USD $10.00 per hour. Please let me know if I should instead enter USD $10.00 as the gross hourly rate.

Howdy! Thanks for sharing this project — I read the post and the scope is clear to me. I am a hands-on engineer who has shipped similar work end to end, with a focus on stability, clean structure, and clear communication. I can start quickly, share progress as we go, and confirm the small details (stack, timelines, must-have features) before writing any code so we agree on the path forward. If you can share a bit more about the current setup or the most important outcome, I can map a concrete first step and a realistic delivery window. Thank you, Marcos.

I currently work as a Head of Retail in the fashion industry, managing business operations across the whole of Japan. In my role, I always focus on how a large number of customers feel rather than just my personal preferences. Also, because I constantly work with global teams, I am used to looking at things objectively. These experiences help me clearly separate my own personal values from broader Japanese cultural values. As a native Japanese speaker living in Japan, I have a deep understanding of current social norms, and I am confident I can bring this practical experience to this project.

As a freelance writer, I have been creating entertainment content for Japanese media since 2017. I also have experience coordinating localization projects and conducting QA. These experiences have trained me to pay close attention to language, context, cultural nuances, and consistency, which I believe are relevant to this project.

I am interested in contributing to Project MARS. I am a native Japanese speaker currently experiencing a two-base lifestyle between Tokyo and Akita. I have also studied and worked in the United States, South Korea, and China through my university studies and professional experiences. Living in countries that are relatively close to Japan culturally has made me especially aware of the subtle differences that can easily be overlooked when comparing Japan only with Western countries. At the same time, living in Akita, one of Japan’s more traditional rural regions, has made me more conscious of aspects of Japanese culture and values that are less visible in urban life. One aspect of Project MARS that particularly interests me is the distinction between mainstream Japanese cultural values and individual personal values. As a parent of three children, I have also had many opportunities to think about education, child welfare, family roles, and expectations toward children and parents. Through these experiences, I have learned to distinguish between what I personally believe is best for my family and what is generally expected or considered appropriate within Japanese society. I believe this ability to consciously separate my own values from broader social norms would be particularly relevant to the cultural and personal perspectives required in Project MARS. I can make up to 20 hours per week available for this project.

Hello, I am a native Japanese speaker currently residing in Japan. I have project-based experience in Japanese AI-response evaluation, annotation, proofreading, audio transcription QA, and guideline-based quality review. Living and working in Japan gives me direct familiarity with current Japanese communication styles, politeness conventions, social expectations, and everyday cultural values. I understand that this project requires mainstream Japanese cultural perspectives and personal perspectives to be evaluated separately, and I can document both carefully without mixing them. I am comfortable reviewing AI-generated responses for naturalness, relevance, consistency, and cultural appropriateness. I also understand the minimum target of 12 annotation sets within 2.5 hours and the project’s strict quality requirements. I will complete all questionnaires and annotations manually using my own judgment. I will not use AI tools, auto-complete, automated annotation aids, or copied external content during the project. I am available for up to 40 hours per week and can begin immediately. I have attached a blind CV without contact details or social media information. Could you please confirm whether both the questionnaire stage and annotation stage are fully billable at the stated USD 10 hourly rate? Thank you for your consideration.
