I need a straightforward method to solve a mathematical problem involving two quadratics multiplied together to equal a constant. The solution should require minimal calculations and be presented in a logical series of steps in Excel, making it suitable for a PLC control to execute. I want to avoid using MS Solver, macros, or the complicated 70-step row solution for Quartic polynomials. Please see the general format of the equations I am dealing with: (ax^2 + bx + c) (dx^2 + ex + f) = 350 For example: EQN 1: EA = 0.00495G^2 – 0.441G + 47 EQN 2: MA = -0.00485G^2 + 0.9456G + 153.35 EQN 3: (M- MA) (E – EA) = 350 In this example, M=199 and E = 80 are known, and the goal is to solve for G. (EQN4) by substituting #1 and #2 into #3 (199 - (0.00495G^2 – 0.441G + 47)) (80 - (-0.00485G^2 + 0.9456G + 153.35)) = 350 While MS Solver is a trivial solution, I need a method that doesn't rely on exhaustive searches. You can multiply it into a Quartic, but that becomes too messy and lengthy. In the above example the only real root and correct answer is 55.08. I can already do both of these. I need a simple series of calculations in Excel that can be easily converted into straightforward code for a PLC. Often solution to Quartics involve transformation into two quadratics. I have two quadratics but the form is one which I am blind to solving.
