Adjust an Arduino library to overcome I2C issues

Need somebody to help fix an issue I'm having with the SparkFun GPS library ([login to view URL]) where the I2C communication is hanging and causing the sketch to freeze (used in an automotive application and EMI is likely causing issues). Just looking for someone to help implement a timeout or reset for the I2C communication who understands how the library operates better than I do. Thanks!
