In this first writng, you will explore a metadata scheme of your choosing, as a way of getting some familiarity with the professional literature and documentation on metadata and learning about the scheme you choose in more depth than we are able to achieve in class. The purpose of this assignment is for you to read and study about a particular scheme and to write a clear, straightforward overview that meets the standards for academic writing at a graduate level. Before you start, read: Professional Writing and the short chapters V and VI ("Choice of Words" and "Avoiding the Superfluous Word") in Sir Ernest Gowers's The Complete Plain WordsPreview the document. (The formatting is odd. It was downloaded from Scribd. I am a subscriber so I feel comfortable sharing this.) Think about applying the information and advice you received from reading these texts. Think of this assignment as something that you might present to professional colleagues, e.g., at a meeting in a library, or as a proposal for a library conference. Give enough background about the topic (e.g., Dublin Core, metadata for image collections, EAD, archival finding aids, etc.) to introduce it to your audience. Your audience is the professional community of librarians, but your writing should be clear enough for an educated layperson to understand. After you have completed a draft of your assignment, go over it and ruthlessly edit out every unnecessary word and phrase and consider whether there are words ("utilize") that can be expressed by a better word ("use.") Your paper should be approximately 2,000 to 2,500 words. It should include 5 - 10 references from the scholarly and professional literature or from metadata documentation and similar reports and guides.
