Plugin recognition

We have a plugin which creates a protocol to launch our plugin from a link on a web page. We need something to identify whether or not the plugin is installed and redirect the user accordingly.

It needs to work in BOTH IE and FireFox, so an ActiveX object "could" be half the solution, but since FF does not do ActiveX, we would need an alternative solution in Java (most likely) for FF.

If someone has a solution that does NOT require user interaction, as is the case with either ActiveX or Java, this solution will be chosen ahead of an ActiveX/Java solution.

To understand how it should work, you can test by installing/uninstalling our plugin at:

[url removed, login to view]

It creates a protocol of "tc5://". If the plugin is installed, a link of:

will launch the plugin software. In IE, this link will result in "Page not found". In FF, it will show the "Launch program" screen, but nothing will happen if you click Launch.

We want people to be directed to one page if this plugin is installed and another page if it is not. We have done some work using javascript to identify if the page is "readable" using innerHTML from a popup upon clicking the protocol link. This seems to usually work in IE, but since FF does not display a "Page Not Found" page, it does not work in FF.
