I am looking for an open-source virtual machine core for embedded hardware development. This core would have the ability to accept extensible modules for every component of the base. Such modules would be BIOS, northbridge, southbridge, CPU, I/O controllers, etc.
It is imperative that the extensible modules exactly duplicate the behaviour of physical hardware and that replacing a module in the virtual machine core be simple.
A successful completion of this project would demonstrate the virtual machine's core accepting a CPU and BIOS module along with an I/O controller duplicating a locally-mounted CD-ROM. The inteded result is for a linux bootable installation CD can detect no difference between an actual machine's CPU and BIOS and that of the virtual machine. Other modules such as the chipset and video card may be necessary to demonstrate this result.
The most important feature of this virtual machine core is fidelity. Next most important is extensibility.
