This assignment specifically addresses the first two learning objectives of the course:
LO1. Understand the organisational and managerial foundations of systems; the strategic role of information systems; how information systems support the organisation, management and business processes; and the ethical and social issues associated with their implementation and use.
LO2. Comprehend contemporary IT infrastructure including hardware and software platforms and services so that informed decisions regarding IT investments can be made, and new technology can be applied with appropriate security and control.
Students may choose either to work alone or team up with another student to complete the assignment. If you opt to work as a team, the same marks will be awarded to both students. No team should exceed more than two students.
Submit only one set of reports if you elect to work as a team to complete this assignment. Note that marks will be awarded on the basis of the student name(s) and student number(s) that appear in the file name and report title page.

However, students are strongly encouraged to avail themselves of this facility to avoid allegations of academic misconduct from unintentional plagiarism from Internet sources. Prepare a journal which records your activities and progress related to completing this assignment. In date order, clearly list the following:

Activity B: Report to CEO (maximum 3000 words)
Select an organisation to focus on for this assignment. The organisation may be a commercial, government or not-for-profit organisation but it must have at least 100 employees and a web site. Use the Internet, corporate publications, industry magazines, newspapers and/or personal contacts to gain information about the organisation and its management of IT. When selecting the organisation, you should take into account the nature of the organisation’s business environment and the extent to which the organisation is dependent on IT to run its operations.
Task 1: Introduction (LO1)
Describe the selected organisation in terms of the following: the industry (e.g. banking, healthcare, travel, pharmaceutical etc.) it operates within, its key products/services, corporate mission, corporate structure, business strategy and relationship with external entities e.g. other organisations, government etc. Provide its homepage URL.
Task 2: Strategic role of information systems (LO1)
Examine the strategic role of information systems at the organisation in terms of the Porter’s competitive forces model depicted on p. 122 in the Laudon & Laudon 11th edn text.
Task 3: Specific social, ethical and legal issues (LO1)
Discuss the social, ethical and legal issues arising from the implementation and use of information systems at the organisation. Consider issues related to its staff and customers.
Task 4: IT infrastructure and emerging technologies (LO2)
Using Figure 5-10 ‘The IT infrastructure ecosystem’ on p. 203 in the Laudon & Laudon 11th edn text as a guide, describe the organisation’s IT infrastructure.
