The swing away mechanism. That's the part that needs real thought in how it holds firm when you need it and also moves out of the way without binding. I build it using a hinge pin system with a spring detent to lock it in the down position, and a simple pull pin to release it for swing. For your aluminum swing away footplates, I'd use 5052 aluminum plate, about 3mm thick, laser cut for precision, and then TIG welded for strength and a clean finish, also I'd machine the pivot pin and detent components from solid 6061-T6 rod for durability. I build the main footplate structure first, then the swing arm components, so that I can ensure perfect alignment of the pivot points before welding everything up.
