A new laser interferometer (Renishaw XM-60) is available which can simultaneously measure all six degrees-of-freedom of a machine tool axis. This system is capable of capturing data during continuous motion of the axis. By capturing data at higher frequency while an axis is moving may help to identify additional sources of error not detectable using the standard quasi-static measurements described in the international standards. This project will use this new laser system to capture data during a variety of tests in order to induce different errors. Analysis techniques such as FFT and wavelets will then be used to extract features in the data that may be static, changing with position, or perhaps changing with time. The research will then diagnose which elements of the mechanical or feed drive control system may be contributing to the measured errors.
