d) Bob The Builder Ltd is building a dam. A total of 10 million ft3 is needed to construct the dam. A bulldozer is used to collect dirt for the dam. Then the dirt is moved via dumpers to the dam site. Only one bulldozer is available and it is hired for £200 per hour. Bob The Builder may hire, at £80 per hour, as many dumpers as desired. Each dumper can hold 1000 ft3 of dirt. It takes an average of 12 minutes for the bulldozer to load a dumper with dirt, and each dumper an average of five minutes to deliver the dirt to the dam and return to the bulldozer. Making appropriate assumptions, determine how Bob The Builder can minimise the total cost of moving the dirt needed to build the dam. Show all working.

Green Rescue is an organisation providing roadside assistance to people whose cars have broken down. They also give advice about reliable garages, tyre and exhaust merchants and the like, to members. About 83% of the calls they get are to report breakdowns, with the rest being for advice. At their call centre, a breakdown call is logged, and then waits until a mechanic reports her/himself as available. The mechanic then drives to the broken–down car, and attempts to repair it. About 77% of cars can be repaired on the spot, but the rest need a recovery trailer for transport to the driver’s home or destination.
A first analysis enabled the head of Green Banner to have an idea of the parameters of this problem:
Rest I will manage.
