I have multiple decades of experience doing this kind of work successfully. Here's how I would proceed: 1. Set the Foundation Discuss and assess your requirements: Build a list of stakeholders who will be using the report. Define what data is in the various sources (and when they become available), and define what the finished product needs to include, including tables, charts/graphs, and sources and definitions used for all metrics. 2. Build a Project Plan Make a plan and a timeline for getting the work done, including a schedule of regular check-ins. 3. Build a Prototype Most users of periodic reporting decide, after seeing the first iteration, that they want to make substantial changes to the report, the layouts, the visuals, or the metrics. So we build the first one quickly, in a spreadsheet. 4. Automate Report Production Once the prototype meets the needs of the stakeholders, then I would automate the process of building the report.
