Optimize MySQL Database for Faster Performance

We have an existing system built on top of MySQL. The system uses a lot of various filters / queries and is very slow. It was built and modified as the needs changed so it is a bit of a “Frankenstein” creation. Our immediate need is to: (1) review the DB structure and suitability for our use cases, (2) optimize tables and queries/filters, and (3) determine if – long term - we should stay with MySQL or switch to something like PostgreSQL.
