APodC is responsible for creating education & credentialing policy for podiatrists. We’re creating a new framework for podiatrists covering 3 areas:
1. Creation of a model for determining competency levels for podiatrists who choose to pursue a career in specific areas of practice–The Competency Framework
2. Creation of an assessment model to determine the quality & educational level of lectures & courses such that they can be used as part of the competency framework
3. Creation of a system of interest groups that will become the vehicle through which the competency framework can be delivered
At the heart of the project is our desire to assist podiatrists build their career by building competency & skills. We need to be able to assess them & put them into a framework that can be easily understood. The framework commences upon registration as a podiatrist & should not address undergraduate competencies other than using them as a starting point.
The podiatry qualification is at a university degree level, but many podiatrists qualified prior to the creation of university level courses. Consideration should be given to how they may also build core competencies as part of their career pathway.
The project now is to prepare 4 separate documents, 1 for each component of the framework & 1 overarching document that explains how the components work together. Where possible, diagrams should be used to illustrate the career pathway & credentialing framework to make it easy for average podiatrists to understand
The Competency Framework needs to outline how podiatrists can achieve competency in specific areas of practice. The framework should outline the career benefits of undertaking a professional credential & should assist interest groups to understand how to apply the framework for their interest area.
The framework needs to specify what components need to be included in the competency standard at each of 3 levels of competency. A template standard should be provided that can be used by interest groups to develop the standard for their specific area of practice.
The framework will also need to outline methods of credentialing at each 3 levels. A template examination format should be provided that can be used by interest groups to develop the standard for their specific area of practice.
A guide to setting & assessing standards along with a draft policy to ensure consistency should be included
Courses for podiatrists are generally organised by volunteers. They range from a 2 hour lecture through to a multi-day course.
To assist podiatrists in selecting appropriate courses for their level of skills (young, advanced) & to ensure courses can map back to the career framework, a model for determining the relative level of courses is required.
The course assessment model should allow for an appropriate assessment of courses to take place. Eg, it would be inappropriate to require a significant assessment of a 2 hour lecture but a 3 day course may require a more rigorous assessment. The incentive for undertaking assessment will be that only assessed courses will be included in the credentialing under the competency framework.
The course assessment document should include a guide for the course providers & for the assessment committee. Course assessment should consider educational objectives & outcomes, financial outcomes & post course evaluation requirements
The interest group framework should outline how interest groups can provide governance for the development & upkeep of competency standards, credentialing & course assessment levels.
The document needs to outline the requirements for membership, the selection process for a national committee & the terms of reference for the committee
The overarching document should outline the different components and positively explain how parts will work together to assist podiatrists in building their career in one or more specific area of practice
