In 2011, researchers have shown a design of an ultra low RF wake-up receiver (PDF attached). The PDF contains references to other low power receiver designs.
The job is to create a module (schematics, PCB layout, and PCB) using this or a similar design and containing a 2.4GHz transceiver including a printed antenna, as well as a microcontroller.
(1) The following power consumption targets must be achieved:
a) <50uW (microwatts) in "rx-sleep" mode. This is the default mode.
b) <50mW (milliwatts) in full operating mode (MCU awake and transmitting data)
(2) Further specs of the module must be met:
a) The module wakes up from rx-sleep mode as soon as a specific preamble including a matching device id is sent to the 2.4GHz transceiver. This also means that the module needs a memory for storing a unique ID.
b) The change from rx-sleep to full operating mode must take no longer than 250ms.
c) Power source of the board: 3V LIPO powered, no external stabilizer.
d) Transceiver speed in full operating mode: >=9.6KBit/s.
e) Transceiver sensitivity/power in rx-sleep and in full operating mode must be such that a reliable indoor range of 25m is achieved @2.4KBit/s.
f) MCU provides at least 20KByte of program space, four digital inputs/outputs (3.3V), and two analog inputs/outputs (PCM). MCU clock rate is at least 128KHz, preferably without a separate crystal.
g) The PCB dimensions must be smaller than 3*3cm (smaller is better). The PCB may be double sided / two layers.
h) The PCB silkscreen layer must contain a note to the manufacturer that the antenna section of the board is sensitive to added copper.
(3) Data files and ownership:
a) The schematics and PCB layout are to be provided in an editable format (EAGLE prefered).
b) In addition, the exact data needed for manufacturing is to be provided, such as BOM, dialectric thickness, trace thickness/width, relative permittivity, characteristic impedance, and any other relevant data.
c) Ownership of the module and all data created as part of this job is transferred to the buyer. Information is not shared with third parties, unless agreed with the buyer.
a) In addition to the above, six functioning PCB (looks-like/works-like) prototypes are to be provided to prove that the modules work as intended.
b) A short program demonstrating the functionality of the boards must be provided, for the sender and receiver each.
