1. Project Overview This project involves the development of a TRNSYS simulation model for a dual source heat pump system supplying hot water. The heat pump can operate using: Ambient air as a heat source, or Water heated by a solar thermal collector and stored in a hot water tank I am a student working to build hands-on capability in TRNSYS. The primary goal of this engagement is knowledge transfer and guided learning, rather than outsourcing the work. 2. Objective of the Engagement The freelancer will act as a technical advisor and mentor for TRNSYS. I will complete approximately 80% of the modeling and simulation work, while the freelancer provides: Guidance Review Troubleshooting support Explanations of TRNSYS concepts and best practices All model development will be done collaboratively with a strong emphasis on learning. 3. Scope of Services 3.1 TRNSYS Guidance and Model Review Review TRNSYS project structure and component selection Advise on appropriate TRNSYS Types for: Heat pump Solar collector Hot water storage tank Pumps, controllers, and flow routing Provide feedback on signal flow, units, and solver settings 3.2 Heat Pump Modeling Support Advise on configuring heat pump performance as a function of source temperature Explain modeling assumptions and limitations of selected TRNSYS Types Assist with troubleshooting unstable or non-converging simulations 3.3 Simplified Solar Collector and Tank Modeling Provide guidance on setting up a simple solar thermal collector model Advise on configuring a hot water storage tank as a heat source Focus on clarity and learning rather than detailed collector optimization 3.4 Control Logic and Source Switching (Learning-Focused) Explain different approaches to source switching in TRNSYS Guide implementation of: Temperature-based switching Priority-based logic (solar first, air as backup) Review and comment on control logic implemented by the student 3.5 Weather Data and Annual Simulation Guidance Advise on importing and configuring weather files Explain timestep selection and its impact on stability and results Support debugging of annual simulations 3.6 Output Interpretation (Technical, Not Academic) Explain how to extract key outputs such as: Heat flows Electrical consumption COP and seasonal COP Assist in verifying whether results are physically reasonable 4. Deliverables Reviewed TRNSYS project files with comments Short written or verbal explanations of: Key modeling decisions Common pitfalls and best practices in TRNSYS Occasional worked examples or screenshots for learning purposes only 5. Working Method I will: Build and modify the TRNSYS model Run simulations Prepare outputs The freelancer will: Review my work Provide corrective guidance Explain concepts rather than implementing full solutions Screen sharing and walkthrough sessions are encouraged where helpful 6. Exclusions Full model development by the freelancer Writing or editing of reports Interpretation of results or conclusions Work outside of TRNSYS 7. Pricing and Commercial Terms The freelancer must propose one of the following: Option A – Fixed Price (Advisory Support) Fixed price covering a defined number of review sessions and feedback cycles OR Option B – Hourly Rate (Mentoring-Based) Hourly rate in USD or ZAR Estimated total hours Time billed primarily for review, explanation, and live guidance 8. Communication Requirements Fluent spoken and written English Ability to explain technical concepts clearly to a student Online meetings as required 9. Confidentiality and Ownership All TRNSYS files and work remain confidential and are owned by the client. The freelancer may not reuse the work without written consent.
