I use Adobe InDesign and set up the margins based on the page count. The manuscript is 158 pages, but based on the layout, I can estimate how many pages it will become after formatting. Recently, I formatted a 386-page manuscript, and it will become 537 pages. Margins are what need to be decided and set up before even touching any words.
