You are to take footage/film of a place that has a flat surface with obvious points that can be tracked
(high contrast points). It is recommended that you move the camera in slow and simple directions
(nothing too fast or complex in movement). This will be your environment or background footage and
the shot should last at least 10 seconds. Take note of what the camera model is that you are filming on
and your lens focal length/lens number. If you are using your phone to film, be sure to just note the
model of your phone.
You will also be required to track this footage, with 3D tracking, or a combination of 2D and 3D tracking.
You must film a person or some action taking place with an object, in front of a green/blue screen. It is
highly recommend that you film your green/blue screen footage using a locked-off camera (no moving
camera) with a tripod. Keep in mind that your green/blue screen footage may need to be the same
duration as your background footage. You will be editing your subject out from the green/blue screen
and compositing the subject over the background footage. You will also be required to composite in at
least one additional element, such as fire, smoke, debris, blood, or something else that you either grab
as stock footage or film yourself.
Make sure to color adjust/match your footage/elements so that everything exists closely or within the
same world. You can use the Grade, HueCorrect, or ColorCorrect nodes to adjust the coloration and the
Blur, Edge Blur, Defocus, and Grain nodes as your “digital glue” to help get everything integrated.
I will also be looking for organized projects. Keep your files organized in folders and your node scripts
clean and organized with Dots and Backdrops. Imagine that you will be passing your project files to
someone else in a studio to continue working on or that you will not look at your node script for a
month and must return to it where you left off.
Have fun with this and try to think of creative ways that you can utilize the green/blue screen and the
magic of visual effects to take your film projects to the next level. Maybe it is shrinking yourself down to
the size of an ant and exploring your new surroundings, a magician making something vanish or
transform, or turning yourself into flying superhero. Remember, the main focus is on your compositing
ability. Your video is not required to have a story or theme, but the possibilities are infinite and having
one always helps the project.
