We are 4A Metal, a French metal fabrication company equipped with industrial laser cutting and sheet-metal machinery. We manufacture low-poly metal sculptures from 3D models. We already have the 3D OBJ models. We are NOT looking for someone to create the 3D models or make renders. We are looking for a freelancer who can transform our existing low-poly OBJ models into production-ready unfolded DXF files for sheet-metal manufacturing. The sculptures are laser-cut from approximately 1.5 mm steel, manually folded into shape and then welded together. This is therefore not ordinary papercraft. The unfolded parts must be designed specifically for real metal fabrication. What we need The freelancer must: * Import and analyse the supplied OBJ model. * Determine an intelligent division of the sculpture into manufacturable metal parts. * Keep several connected facets together whenever practical, instead of making every triangle a separate part. * Decide which edges should remain folds and which edges should become cut/separation edges between parts. * Avoid pieces containing an unreasonable number of folds or folds that would be physically difficult/impossible to perform by hand. * Unfold every resulting metal part accurately into 2D. * Number all parts and matching assembly edges. * Clearly distinguish mountain and valley folds / folding direction. * Indicate the required fold angle whenever possible. * Prepare the fold lines for our laser-cutting process. * Deliver clean DXF files ready for our laser software. Very important – Fold-line design Our parts are manually folded after laser cutting. We therefore want the internal fold lines designed so that they can be processed directly by our laser. The preferred principle is a fold line composed of: engraving / marking – small cut or relief – engraving / marking along the folding axis. The purpose is to: * clearly identify the exact folding line; * indicate the folding direction; * facilitate manual bending; * reduce the force required to create the fold; * maintain enough material between the facets so that they remain connected as one physical part. The exact geometry of this system can be developed together and standardized for all future sculptures. The freelancer therefore needs to understand that the DXF is not simply a visual unfolded pattern. It must actually work in sheet metal. Production philosophy We do NOT want: one separate piece for every triangle automatic unfolding with huge impractical islands hundreds of unnecessary welds fold patterns that are impossible to reproduce manually a PDF intended only for paper/cardboard We DO want: ✓ intelligent groups of connected facets ✓ practical manual folding ✓ fewer physical pieces where possible ✓ logical weld seams ✓ clearly identified fold directions and angles ✓ numbered assembly edges ✓ clean laser-ready DXF files ✓ repeatable manufacturing logic First paid test The first project will be a paid test using one existing low-poly OBJ model. If the manufacturing files are good, we have many additional sculptures to develop and are looking for a long-term collaboration. Please apply only if you have experience with at least one of the following: Pepakura / Blender unfolding / papercraft development / low-poly mesh preparation / sheet-metal unfolding / laser-cut fabrication. When applying, please send us examples of previous unfolded models or comparable work.

Hi, I can transform your low-poly OBJ models into practical, laser-ready DXF patterns for 1.5 mm steel fabrication. I work in Rhino and CAD-based workflows, with hands-on experience in fabrication documentation, CNC processes, and mold-making. I’ll analyze each mesh and intelligently group connected facets to reduce unnecessary parts, welds, and difficult manual folds. For each sculpture, I can define cut/separation edges, fold lines, mountain/valley directions, target angles, relief or small-cut geometry, part numbers, and matching assembly-edge references. The patterns will be developed for real metal bending—not paper-style unfolding—with attention to manual forming limits, weld access, fit-up, and repeatable production. I can provide clean DXF files and a consistent folding/marking standard for future models. Comparable fabrication samples can be shared privately. What laser marking, relief-cut, and DXF-layer standards does your production team currently use? Can you provide the first OBJ together with the target scale, steel thickness, and preferred maximum part size? Let’s discuss your project now!

Hello 4A Metal, Your requirement is clearly production-focused: turning low-poly OBJ sculptures into practical, laser-ready DXF parts rather than paper-style unfoldings. I can analyze the mesh, group connected facets intelligently, choose workable separation edges, and prepare numbered assembly edges with mountain/valley fold guidance and fold angles where feasible. The fold-line system can be developed around your engraving-relief-engraving principle so parts remain connected, bend manually, and suit approximately 1.5 mm steel fabrication. Using Industrial Design, Blender 3D and 3D Design workflows, I will validate manufacturability, minimize unnecessary welds, and deliver clean files aligned with your laser process. I can begin with the paid test model and establish a repeatable standard for future sculptures; please share the OBJ, target DXF conventions, and any machine constraints. What are your laser software’s preferred DXF layer conventions and the exact engraving, relief, and separation-cut parameters for 1.5 mm steel? Best regards, Sahil

Hello, I reviewed the requirements, and the core challenge is converting the low-poly OBJ geometry into practical sheet-metal fabrication parts rather than simply creating a flat pattern, especially where fold strategy, welding, manual bending, and laser processing affect the final assembly. I would analyse the mesh, define logical facet groups, create manufacturable part divisions, prepare fold and relief lines suitable for laser processing, number assembly edges, and deliver clean DXF files designed around real 1.5 mm steel fabrication requirements. I have worked on similar low-poly unfolding, sheet-metal development, fabrication drawings, DXF preparation, and 3D-to-manufacturing workflows and can share relevant examples once we connect in chat. Hello, Vutuk Design and Media is an engineering design and manufacturing preparation studio led by Ashraf Ali Shaikh, a senior mechanical design engineer with 15 years of core industry experience. Our team specializes in sheet metal DFM optimization, 3D CAD-to-DXF transformation, automated DXF batch processing, and 2D fabrication drawing sets for sheet metal shops. To establish a clear workflow for your 3D model to DXF flat pattern project: What format are your source 3D models currently in (e.g., SolidWorks .SLDPRT, STEP, IGES, Fusion 360, or Inventor files)? Will you require CNC nesting layout optimization (arranging multiple DXF flat patterns onto standard sheet sizes to minimize material scrap)? Do you need a complete itemized Bill of Materials (BOM) linked to the DXF flat pattern file names for inventory and laser cutting tracking? Would you also like 3D assembly renders or folded/unfolded step-by-step PDF manuals to assist shop floor fabrication operators? We deliver production-ready 1:1 DXF flat patterns, verified sheet metal geometry, complete cutting lists, and visual documentation. We invite you to visit our profile page to explore our studio portfolio and capabilities. Looking forward to discussing your project!
