1. Define a method of dividing the earth up into square kilometres. I am aware that this may get a little tricky around the poles. The initial brief is to display over Google Maps which I believe is limited to 85 degrees of latitude, however, the square kilometres will subsequently be displayed over maps which include the poles so it is imperative that the method includes the poles.
2. Define a schema to reference the kilometre squares in a database table. The table will include two columns:
"Comment" string 140 characters
3. Develop a web page showing a Google map showing a grid layer over the top defining the square kilometre boundaries. All kilometre squares not "Selected" in the server database will be filled in by a partially transparent white overlay. All kilometre squares "Selected" will not be overlaid by a fill, but will result in a callout tooltip displaying the text in the "Comment" field of the server database.
The web page will be tested in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Opera and IE
