AWS Infrastructure Plan This document outlines the proposed AWS services and configurations for the project, ensuring scalability, security, and cost efficiency. ________________________________________ 1. Database Setup • MongoDB, Redis, and MySQL will be deployed and managed using a Helm chart for consistent, version-controlled, and automated Kubernetes deployments. ________________________________________ 2. Application Deployment • Microservices Architecture will be deployed on AWS Fargate instead of AWS EKS, chosen for its native autoscaling capabilities, reduced operational overhead, and serverless container management. ________________________________________ 3. Media Asset Management • AWS S3 Bucket will be used for storing media assets. • The bucket will be private to ensure secure storage and controlled access. ________________________________________ 4. Backup Strategy • S3 Snapshots will be used for creating regular backups of databases and assets. • AWS Backup Lifecycle Manager will be implemented for automatic backups and retention policy management. ________________________________________ 5. SSL Certificates • AWS Certificate Manager (ACM) will be used to issue free SSL certificates for secure HTTPS communication. ________________________________________ 6. DNS Management • Amazon Route 53 will handle DNS management, ensuring high availability, scalability, and reliable routing of traffic to the application. ________________________________________ 7. Content Delivery & Caching • AWS CloudFront will be integrated as a Content Delivery Network (CDN) for improved performance and caching. • This will be enabled if the application requires global reach to ensure low-latency content delivery. ________________________________________ Benefits of This Setup • Scalability: Autoscaling via AWS Fargate. • Security: Private S3 storage, SSL via ACM. • Cost Efficiency: Pay-as-you-go for compute and storage. • Performance: Optional global caching via CloudFront. • Reliability: Automated backups and lifecycle management. • Control: DNS management with Route 53 ----- 1. MongoDB Atlas for Database We will not deploy MongoDB inside Kubernetes via Helm. Instead, we’ll use MongoDB Atlas (managed cloud database). Reasons for this change: Managed service – backups, upgrades, and scaling are handled automatically. High availability – built-in replication across availability zones. Performance – better connection handling and low-latency VPC peering with AWS. Security – IP whitelisting, encryption, and dedicated private networking. Action Points: Use a MongoDB Atlas cluster in the same AWS region as our application. Enable VPC Peering between our AWS VPC and Atlas VPC. Store the MongoDB connection string in AWS Secrets Manager or Kubernetes secrets. Update all microservices to use the Atlas connection string from the secret. 2. Development Platform Setup We need a dedicated development environment where all code pushed to the develop branch will automatically deploy. Proposed Setup: Kubernetes Namespace: develop namespace in our EKS cluster. CI/CD Integration: Use GitHub Actions / GitLab CI to auto-deploy code from develop branch to the develop namespace. Automatic build and push of Docker images to ECR. Trigger Helm/Kustomize deployment in the develop namespace. MongoDB Atlas Setup Create two separate clusters: Production DB – for live user data Development DB – isolated environment for testing & staging, no connection to production data Configure IP whitelisting and user roles accordingly. Development Platform Any code pushed to the develop branch will be automatically deployed to the development environment. This ensures that development changes are tested on a live-like environment before production release. Branch Deployment Rules develop branch → deploy to development environment (with Development DB) main/master branch → deploy to production environment (with Production DB) Next Step DevOps to configure MongoDB Atlas clusters and environment variables in K8s. CI/CD pipeline to be updated for automatic deploys on branch push. Testing team to validate that develop environment is isolated from production. Expected Benefits MongoDB Atlas removes the burden of maintaining DB instances inside K8s. The Development Platform allows us to test features in an isolated live environment before merging to production. Automated deployments reduce manual errors and speed up development cycles.
