I have a mailer script that sends out large amounts of email via a seperate non-cpanel centos 4.4 server via qmail. The script automatically checks a pop3 account for bounced emails and disables sending for those addresses. The only bounced emails received are ones that the receiving mail servers send well after the message was delivered, specifically the 'your message has been deferred, no need to retry' messages. No bounces are received for email addresses that have been disabled or no longer exist.
This setup used to work properly in the past, I believe this problem started after someone attempted to do some optimization to reduce server load and increase mail output. I know the mailer script is functioning fine as I can set it to use its own 'local' mailer (Exim) and it receives bounce messages properly.
I believe this is a fairly simple fix and was atcually intentionally set this way in the past in order to speed up delivery and reduce server load.
This is a very high volume mail server, so this could lead to other jobs if I can find someone with the right skills for this kind of configuration. (server optimization, increasing delivery rates, increasing throughput, etc).
In addition to fixing the bounce problem, I would need a backup of any files modified and instructions to 'undo' any changes if the need arises.
