We are developing a custom vacuum system and need a mechanical engineer to design a simple, durable quick-connect interface for a removable cylindrical stainless-steel accessory. Key constraints: - Accessory must remain single-piece stainless steel - Must be manufacturable by metal 3D printing - Internal diameter must remain unchanged - No plastic parts, seals, inserts or added components on the accessory - No lubrication - Simple, robust design suitable for repeated use - Minimal axial/radial play - Fast and intuitive connection/disconnection Any moving parts, springs, seals or locking mechanisms should be located on the vacuum side. Expected work: - Propose 2–3 concepts - Recommend the best solution - Develop the selected design - Provide CAD files and technical drawings - Consider tolerances, wear, friction and galling Further dimensions and CAD files will be shared under NDA.

I can develop a simple, robust quick-connect interface for your stainless-steel vacuum accessory, with the connection designed around repeated use and minimal play. I’ll explore 2–3 practical concepts first, focusing on friction, tolerances, wear, galling and metal-3D-printing constraints while keeping the accessory completely single-piece with no seals, inserts or added components. Once the preferred concept is selected, I can develop the detailed CAD and technical drawings, with the locking/moving mechanism kept on the vacuum side as required. I work primarily in Fusion 360 and can provide clean CAD files and manufacturing-ready documentation. I’m also comfortable working under NDA before reviewing the detailed dimensions and existing CAD.

I have completed similar mechanical product design, stainless-steel component, DFM, and 3D-printing projects, including interfaces and assemblies requiring tight tolerances, repeated engagement, and reliable mechanical operation. I can develop a simple, durable quick-connect solution for your removable cylindrical accessory while respecting the requirement that the accessory itself remains a single-piece stainless-steel component. I understand that the accessory cannot use seals, inserts, plastic components, lubrication, or additional hardware, and that the internal diameter must remain unchanged. I will therefore focus the connection mechanism on the vacuum-side interface and design the accessory geometry around reliable engagement, controlled clearances, wear resistance, and straightforward metal additive manufacturing. Scope of Work Review supplied dimensions and CAD under NDA Develop 2–3 quick-connect concepts Evaluate axial/radial retention and play Consider friction, wear and stainless-steel galling Evaluate tolerance stack-up and manufacturability Consider metal 3D-printing limitations and post-processing Recommend the most suitable concept Fully develop the selected interface Design vacuum-side locking/moving components where required Check repeated connection/disconnection behavior Optimize geometry for strength, simplicity and usability Regards, Sidra

Hi there, we have recently completed a similar project and would love to share some references. I understand the need for a robust, single-piece stainless steel design that’s manufacturable through metal 3D printing. I will develop 2-3 concepts focusing on a simple, intuitive quick-connect interface that eliminates axial and radial play while ensuring durability. This approach will minimize wear and galling, leading to a longer-lasting solution. Here's how we'd approach it: - Brainstorm innovative concepts tailored to your constraints - Analyze and recommend the best option based on functionality - Create detailed CAD files and technical drawings for production While we might be newer to Freelancer, we bring 9+ years of experience delivering this kind of work off-platform and multiple 5-star reviews to back it up. I’d love to offer a free consultation to discuss your project further, even if you don’t hire us. Kind regards, Alexia

Hi, I specialize in mechanical concept design and Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM), focusing purely on delivering computationally validated, production-ready digital models. I can develop the unlubricated, single-piece stainless steel quick-connect interface for your vacuum system. Preventing wear and galling in repeated-use stainless interfaces requires careful contact mechanics. I leverage my surface engineering and structural analysis background to optimize tolerances. I will also apply DfAM principles for Selective Laser Melting (SLM) to ensure reliable 3D printing without excessive internal supports. Workflow: Concepts: Drafting 2-3 initial 3D concepts (e.g., bayonet or cam-lock) using FreeCAD for commercial-ready STEP/IGES files. All moving parts will remain on the vacuum side. FEA Verification: Running contact and stress simulations via CalculiX or Code_Aster to validate locking forces and structural integrity. (Note: I am highly proficient in ANSYS Workbench and can use it via remote desktop if you provide a commercial license). Deliverables: Final digital models and technical drawings with precise metal 3D printing tolerances. My rate for advanced computational design and FEA is $50 USD/hour. I do not undertake physical assembly; 100% of my time is dedicated to perfecting your digital geometry (estimated at 40 hours total). I am ready to sign the NDA and review your CAD files. Hello, I am an electrical and robotics engineer who does mechanical design in Autodesk Inventor, and your constraints point toward a design where the stainless accessory carries only printed geometry while everything that moves lives on the vacuum side. I would propose three concepts, a bayonet with printed lugs on the accessory and a spring-loaded rotating collar on the vacuum side, a ball-detent coupling where balls held in a vacuum-side sleeve drop into a printed groove, and a lever cam that pulls the accessory against a face seal on the vacuum side. I would compare them on axial and radial play, speed of connection and wear, then develop the best one with tolerances that account for metal printing distortion and a small machining allowance on the mating faces. To limit galling I would avoid stainless-on-stainless sliding by using a dissimilar or coated material for the vacuum-side contact parts and by specifying the surface finish of the printed faces. You would receive STEP files, native files if useful, and fully dimensioned PDF drawings with tolerances, and I am happy to sign your NDA. My mechanical work, including a harmonic-drive robot joint and a sealed flashlight assembly, is at herdinand.github.io. Best regards, Herdinand

Hi, I design hard-surface stainless mechanisms (locks, couplings, wear-tolerant fits) for metal 3D print + machine finishing. **Approach for your vacuum quick-connect** 1. 2–3 concept layouts (bayonet / ball-lock / cam-collar) sized to your vacuum duty, with clear lock/unlock motion and wear surfaces called out. 2. You pick one → I deliver part solids + assembly, with critical tolerances for sealing face, latch travel, and print orientation notes. 3. Drawing pack for shop / print house. **Samples:** attached — chrome / stainless product stills and joint close-ups from similar hard-surface metal assemblies (Cycles). Closest public stand-ins until your envelope + interface dims are in the thread. **Bid:** €28 fixed for concept set + chosen concept CAD (parts + assembly). If you need full manufacturing drawings + tolerance stack beyond that, I will quote the delta before drawing. **Question:** preferred CAD (STEP + 2D PDF, or SolidWorks native)? Vacuum rating / tube OD / face-seal type? Ready to start with 2–3 concepts this week. Best regards

A stainless quick-connect for a vacuum accessory has to stay single-piece print-friendly while keeping ID clear and play minimal. Designs that rely on seals, plastics, or lubricated inserts usually fail your constraints; the workable path is geometry-driven retention on the mating side with a robust stainless interface on the accessory. I would develop the interface in CAD (SolidWorks or equivalent), keep the accessory as one stainless printable body with unchanged internal diameter, and put any springs or locking motion on the non-accessory side so repeated connect/disconnect stays intuitive with minimal axial and radial play. I have designed manufacturable metal interfaces for repeated mechanical coupling where print orientation and fillet strategy mattered as much as the lock concept. What is the nominal OD/ID and axial envelope of the accessory, and is the mating port already fixed or open to redesign? Ridwaan M
