Add and verify your custom domain in the new tenant by TXT record first, while your existing mail keeps flowing untouched. 2. Provision the single user, licence it, set the custom domain as primary SMTP. 3. Migrate mail, contacts and calendar. A personal Microsoft account is not an Exchange tenant, so no cutover migration path exists here: I use a PST export/import or an IMAP migration, whichever suits your volume. At a few months of mail both are quick and lossless. 4. Move the small set of OneDrive files across manually. 5. Only then re-point MX, and publish SPF, DKIM and DMARC. I drop the TTL ahead of cutover so the switch propagates in minutes, and verify inbound and outbound delivery before calling it done. 6. Your old personal account stays active and dormant. I do not touch it. You also get brief written guidance for signing in again on your devices and Outlook profiles. One question, because it changes step 1: is your custom domain currently attached to that personal Microsoft account as an alias, or held separately at your registrar? If it is on the personal account it must be released there first, and that account needs a different sign-in address, otherwise you lose the very fallback you want to keep.
