Hello, I am a veteran (25+ years) database developer with real industry experience using SQL Server (from Sybase days to v17), Oracle (v6 thru 12c), MySQL (4.x thru 8.x) and a few others. Serious SQL and procedural SQL (T-SQL, PL/SQL skills). I have almost always been involved with performance optimization - which range from monitoring server performance and identifying bottlenecks, spotting poorly performing queries, right-sizing servers. Techniques to optimize include: a) Examining the query (esp the where condition) b) Examining indexes with reference to the where condition c) Examining the 'explain plan' of the query d) Examining data skew and statistics e) If none of these point to obvious improvements, examine the table (physical parameters) - check if partitioning is possible f) Check if increasing temporary area sizes helps There is much more which can be done if none of a thru f help. The driving philosophy is not to impose any change on the application(s) I have used many tools to aid diagnoses including ADDM/AWR/ASH with Oracle, SolarWinds/dbForge for SQL Server. SQL Server Management Studio provides the ability to view the live execution plan of an active query: it will be usefull to add indexes or de-normalize some tables. Are the results of these queries displayed in specific software (web/windows)? Are you willing to perform denormalization (like a cache) tasks to make the readings more efficient?
