Compiling VLC Android 2.0.6 and 2.1.2

I'm trying to compile a older version of VLC for Android. I can compile the latest version from git in Ubuntu just fine but when compiling 2.0.6 I get "You need the NDKv11 or later" even though that NDK version is there.
With 2.1.2 I get "configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables" even though it compiles fine for newer versions of VLC for Android. These errors are driving me crazy.
I want step by step instructions on how to fix these compilation problems. So I can follow those and learn from it.
