PetroOman LLC is a leading oil and gas firm in the middle east operating in four locations, with headquarter (HQ) in Muscat and a branches in Salalah, Suhar and Abu Dhabi. The main office and branches have 20 workstations each including wireless clients. The offices in the four locations are interconnected using 25 Mbps dedicated serial links and routers. Staff in these offices normally use applications such as File transfer, E-mail, Web browsing, Print etc. All
Simulating Multimedia Networks
the servers are located in the HQ. As part of enhancing communication facilities, the company wishes to introduce real-time video and voice conferencing services to its staff. However, it is felt that the current network setup in the four locations is not providing the required QoS performance to users for such real-time interactive applications and the management is planning to upgrade their network infrastructure.
Each project group is expected to undertake a QoS evaluation of the corporate network scenario described above applying modeling and simulation methodology, analyse the performance and limitations of the network and suggest methods for improvement. Appropriate QoS performance parameters that are to be analysed during the simulation study are to be selected. If the LAN/WAN infrastructure requires upgrade, then suitable hardware, software, technology, protocols etc. are to be suggested so as to provide acceptable QoS performance to users for real-time applications taking into account immediate future expansion as well. Appropriate methods are to be used with proper justification in terms of cost, time, effectiveness and other realistic constraints to enhance the QoS of the network and performance improvements are to be demonstrated through appropriate results and analysis.
