The part that quietly breaks most Razorpay builds: the browser success callback is not proof of payment. If the user closes the tab after paying, or a callback fires twice, orders go missing or get double-created. So the order state gets driven by the signed webhook, verified against your secret, with the client callback treated only as a UI hint. Idempotency key on the Razorpay payment ID so a replayed webhook can't create a second order. I built the checkout and payment pipeline at Poundit on Django plus Node — Stripe there, same problem shape: hosted popup, webhook reconciliation, order records that had to stay correct when the two disagreed. Razorpay's flow maps onto it directly. Stack recommendation: Laravel if your front-end is server-rendered or you want the fastest path, Django if you'd rather stay in Python. I've shipped both. Social login through Google and Facebook, token verified server-side, then your own JWT — never trusting the provider token past the initial exchange. Keys in env, test and live switched by one variable. Orders, payment status and customer details stored so an admin panel or a protected export endpoint can read them later.

Razorpay's client-side handler callback is not authoritative. If a customer pays and then closes the tab before the browser fires the callback, that order stays unpaid in your database while the money is in your account. It happens constantly on mobile. So the order state has to be driven by the webhook, with the client callback treated only as a hint that something probably happened. Build it the other way round and you spend your life reconciling by hand. Three things that go with that: Signature verification on every webhook, HMAC SHA256 against your webhook secret. Without it your endpoint is a public URL where anyone can POST a payment-success payload and get free goods. This gets skipped more often than you'd think. Idempotency. Razorpay retries webhooks, so the same event will arrive more than once. Every handler needs to be safe to run twice — a unique constraint on the payment ID, and a check on current order state before transitioning it. Server-side amount verification. The cart total must be recomputed on the server from your own product prices before creating the Razorpay order, never taken from the client. Otherwise a modified request buys a ₹50,000 item for ₹1. Same principle on social login: verify the Google or Facebook token server-side against their API and take the user identity from the verified response, not from a profile object the client sends alongside it. On stack: I'd suggest Node.js unless your front-end pushes another way, mainly because Razorpay's Node SDK is the best maintained and it keeps one language across the project. Django is equally fine if you'd prefer it. Tell me what the front-end is and I'll match it rather than impose something. Rough plan: auth and session handling first, then cart and order model, then Razorpay in test mode end to end including deliberate failure cases, then webhooks with signature verification and replay handling, then the admin read endpoint and emails. Test mode throughout, with the live-mode switch as an environment variable as you asked. Around 12 days. Two questions: what is the existing front-end built in, and do you want order confirmation emails through a service like SendGrid or Amazon SES, or plain SMTP? SMTP from an application server usually lands in spam, which matters for a confirmation email. I'd want to test the failure paths with you before handover — a cancelled payment, a webhook that arrives twice, a payment that succeeds after the browser closes. Those three cases are where payment integrations actually break, and they're easy to demonstrate on test keys.
