Hello, Mike,
I have been working as a Patent Attorney for almost twenty years, and can assist you in converting your Provisional documentation into a regular Utility patent application for submittal to the U.S. Patent Office. The filing fee for a patent application having a maximum of twenty (20) claims is $530 (if filed online). The documents to be filed must be in .pdf format, and must pass the validation procedure of the Patent Office filing software.
To convert your Provisional, the text will almost certainly require some editing. This task would be made easier if you were able to provide the original document in Word format (.doc) - editing a .pdf file is not as convenient as a Word file.
It has been my experience that, unless the Provisional application was drafted to support specific claim language (perhaps yours was?), converting the application to a Utility patent application will involve at least a modest amount of editing and the addition of a fair amount of text to provide "enablement" and claim-supporting disclosure.
It's difficult to predict in advance the amount of editing that would be required without first seeing the original Provisional. I would estimate that, given the Provisional text in .doc format, a decent editing task cannot be completed in less than a week - and may take two weeks. The reason for this length of time is that, as the editing process is conducted, the specification evolves into a better document, and as the document is thus improved, the claim language improves as well. And, that is the objective of the application - to present and "sell" the claim language so that the Examiner is more likely to grant allowance to the patent application.
This process typically takes two or more drafts, reviews by the inventor, communications between the inventor and the patent practitioner, and the filing activity itself. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
