This project is to develop a simple tool to import vulnerability assessment reports from Nessus into a SQL database and then generate formatted PDF files with the data organized and presented in an attractive and readable format.
Nessus will generate PDF files natively, but these tend to be very complicated and unattractive. This project will focus on making reports that are easier to understand for the non-technical audience. We will provide style guide, graphics and static text as necessary to complete the project.
While a number of open source solutions are available to handle components of this project, these are generally designed for Web use and if they can output PDF files, they tend to be no more user-friendly than those produced by Nessus itself.
A simple administrative interface will be required to generate individual reports, as well as create trend reports tracking changes in data over time. Data will be broken down by client, network, host, date as well as other factors.
Note that, while MySQL would be preferable as the database engine to use on this project, PostgreSQL or other open source database could be acceptable.
Employer questions: (1) How much experience do you have using Nessus?
(2) What projects have you completed that generate PDF files from a SQL database?
(3) Assuming PDF files generated will simply be reformatted content already available in existing Nessus reports, and other components of the project are obvious housekeeping functions, how long do you expect this project to take?
