We are currently converting a VB application to asp (intranet) This application is based on Sqlserver (client server) The application contains a number of reports writen with active report (AR) Some reports are pretty sophisticated with multiple sub reports and relatively complex column span. They intend to be customer oriented reports, not drafts. We are looking for a solution to - either generate the reports on the server and make them available under http - or convert them to some report generator more suitable for web reports (pdf, doc or xml for example) For generating the report on the server, we would envision the following steps: Active report (or a similar report generator utility) would be installed on the IIS server machine an asp page would let a web user request for an instance of a particular report to be generated The request would launch a stored procedure that would call AR executable, pass the right parameters, capture the result and put the result as blob in a dedicated table of sqlserver (or would create a temporary file on the IIS machine within the http space) The http page would write some cookies and when the report is ready, a pop up window would inform the user that the report is ready and invite him/her to download it via http (the report would always be an independant downloadable file) Although we do not reject them totally, we would be extremely reluctant to use a java based server solution. Our prefered solution would be a TSql routine, a dll writen in vb6, a VB script solution is also acceptable if not too complicated. Other alternatives can aso be considered. Using a commercial web report generator is also a possible alternative. We have noticed this one : [login to view URL] There are probably several other similar program, not necessarily in pdf.
