Please read the information overleaf about the background to the problem. There are decisions to be made concerning the clean up of the Great Lakes. Please study carefully the very simplified support system shown below which will form the basis of your assignment. Concentration of pollutant is defined as the mass of pollutant per km3 of water (i.e. it is measured in gms per km3)
**For this work you will need to use ‘powersim’ software…..**
1. Write down the assumptions that need to be made so that this model can be used as a simple prototype for your decision support systems. 10 marks
2. Get data for the model from the Internet (quoting your sources) . Run the model to check the figures in the diagram. What is your estimate for Lake Huron? 15 marks
3. Build a bigger model involving all five great lakes examining the effect of each on each other. Use this to revise your estimates and comment on the results. 15 marks
4. Conduct various investigations (at least three different scenarios ) as to what would happen if all inflow of pollutant did not stop immediately or enters in a non-continuous way. Marks will be awarded for models containing table functions, the PULSE function and the IF .. THEN function. 25 marks
5. Present conclusions and logical exposition. 10 marks
6 Write a short essay (minimum 2 pages in Microsoft Word font size12, Times New Roman ) on how your decision support system developed here could be expended to be more realistic. 25 marks
