So far, I have developed my own excel spreadsheet to run a Formula 1 race strategy simulation. Esentially, it involves analysing a series of laptimes from a driver during Friday Practise, and extrapolating that data to determine their best race strategy. If this is done for every driver, we can in theory run a virtual race. Excel has it's limitations in presenting the information in video form, which is ideal.
As a car completes consecutive laps, the fuel burns off (making the car quicker), but the tyres degrade (making the car slower). As a result, it's important to determine the 'cut off point' or critical moment to induce a pitstop to run the fastest race. There are two types of tyres brought to each event, and how much time a car invests in running that particular tyre is important. Some are quicker, but don't last as long, and some tyres are slower but are more durable and consistent in their performance.
The idea of the program is to plot a drivers practise times, and have the program anaylse all possible tyre and pitstop combinations to determine the fastest race strategy. This can then be developed further for all drivers to run a virtual race after qualifying positions are determined.
There are many other factors that influence the strategy and will need to be included into the program. For example, the chance of rain may influence strategy. The probability of overtaking another car, and the appearance of saftey cars (bunching the grid during an accident) also change strategy on the spot. These concepts need to be incorporated into the program such that information can be inputted live, and the program can analyse feasbility of pitstops and provide quick solutions.
Im interested in developing this idea further, and would like to hear your opinion on the possiblity to produce such a program, expected time frame, costs associated, legal matters, and other steps required.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. I am more than happy to meet and discuss the idea further, or skype, or phone call. My details are below (prefer email replies).
