Modify an exiting php script to insert xml files into wordpress

We are adapting a legacy vanilla php site into a wordpress installation, new articles are dropped in to a folder on the web server and the existing script is run using CRON to insert the stories into a mySql database. It has some logic within the script which categorises the stories which we wish to maintain within the new wordpress installation. We can create a compatible custom post type and appropriate taxonomy structure within wordpress to help the process but need the existing script adapted so that it will insert the articles into wordpress and correctly categorise them.
