The project is a generic exercise designed to simulate the information flows and resource issues that are typically found in a project environment.
Following completion of the task, you are to complete a group report on the task. As a minimum, this report is to cover the following:
- A description of the way in which the team approached and ran the task
- An assessment of the team’s performance
- An analysis of the reasons that the team performed as it did
- A summary of learning opportunities from the task
The group report is to be followed by an individual write-up of no more than 2 sides of A4.
This write-up is to provide an individual perspective of the task, commenting on any areas of contention in the group report and the function of the group as a while (if not covered adequately in the group report).
The individual report should also seek to identify linkages between elements of the task and the module material. References may also be made to external sources of project management theory.
Finally, each submission is to include (on the final page) a peer review of your fellow team members (do not review yourself!). Each team member is to be rated on a scale from 0 to 5 using the following criteria:
5 – participated with total enthusiasm and effectiveness in all group activity
4 – participated enthusiastically and reasonably effectively in at least most group activity
3 – participated with a reasonable level of enthusiasm most of the time
2 – failed to engage with the group to the level that would be expected most of the time
1 – a total let down
0 – no meaningful engagement with the group at all
It is important that the peer review is conducted objectively in accordance with the listed criteria.
Marks for individuals within the group may be subject to adjustment in the event of significant anomalies in the peer review.
This assignment is intended to be enjoyable as well as being an opportunity to experience the sort of pressures and complexity that a project manager can expect to encounter, albeit on a modest scale. It is essential a team exercise so please give it 100% effort: just as in real life project management, the outcome can only be as good as the team effort behind it.
