Introduction to Laser Trackers
A laser tracker is an upgraded CMM device and CMM stands for Coordinate Measuring Machine. This is used to measure an object’s physical geometrical features and the machines were sometimes operated manually or with the use of a computer. A probe is generally affixed to the 3rd moving axis on the device which is used to define the measurements. These probes can vary from mechanical, white light, optical or the one we are currently discussing which is laser.
The laser trackers came about in the 1980 and uses a laser beam to measure coordinates by tracking the beam to a retro-reflective mark. This is a surface that will reflect the laser beam back to the tracker with little to no scattering of the laser light.
These trackers are used to measure objects that are close and far away with great accuracy. The standard laser trackers can measure the characteristics of a target that is up s5 meters away and still maintain accurate measurements of a fraction of an inch at 5 metres. The good thing about these trackers is that they only require a sole operator and it returns this information very quickly. Therefore coordinate measurement methods have been vastly improved.
A laser tracker is being widely used today because it is pretty simple for many people and it operates at high speed. What the tracker does is to measure both angle and distance. As a matter of fact it measures two angles. When the tracker sends out that laser light to the target with the retroflector, the light is then reflected back to the tracker via the same path that it was emitted. Different retroflectors are used but the most popular is the sphere. When the light leaves the retroflector and heads back to the laser tracker a small portion of that light is drawn to the equipped interferometer and this is what will measure the distance between the Statute Mile Radius (SMR) and the laser tracker itself.
Angular encoders are often seen when a laser tracker is being used for measurement. These are small devices that are used for the measurement of the angular orientation of the 2 mechanical axis of the laser tracker. The centre of the SMR is then located by the measurement of the distance of interferometer and the angle of the encoder. An offset equal is applied to the SMR radius by the tracker software to attain the scanned surface’s coordinates.
The ways in which certain items are measured have evolved over the years and the use of trackers, more specifically laser trackers are becoming the most popular means of measurement. There are many companies that manufacture these devices, but each one are basically made up of the same components. These components will include, but is not limited to, a probe, which is being attached with a laser light for recent model, the interferometer for measurement and the reflector, which will be responsible for sending the light back to the interferometer so that it can be measured.
