Embedded Engineer - Wearable Smart Glasses + Pocket AI Unit Project Overview We are looking for an experienced embedded systems engineer (or a small team) to design and build a working prototype of a wearable visual reading assistant. The system is composed of: • 1. Smart Glasses (Head Unit): Image capture + bone conduction audio. • 2. Pocket Processing Unit: AI processing, 4G/Bluetooth communication, and power management. The system must be absolutely silent to the external environment, reliable, and discreet, suitable for use in quiet settings (e.g., libraries). This is a hardware + firmware project requiring industrial-quality execution. Scope of Work A. Head Unit (Smart Glasses) • Base Frame: Carrera 8825/4416 or similar - Matte Black Acetate. Size: 55-16-145. • Optical Prescription: The lenses must incorporate the prescription details provided below. o Future Replaceability: The design must allow for the prescription lenses to be changed in the future without issues (lenses must not be permanently sealed or glued to the electronics). o Pupillary Distance (PD): 67 mm. o Right Eye: Sph: -2.50, Cyl: -1.00, Axis: $180^{\circ}$. o Left Eye: Sph: -2.50, Cyl: -1.50, Axis: $175^{\circ}$. • Camera: OV5640 (5MP) or similar, pinhole lens, mounted in the bridge area. o Focal Length: Fixed focus optimized for reading distance (30-50 cm). This is critical for document clarity. o Screen Compatibility: The capture logic must be able to take a quick burst (2-3 frames) and select the clearest one to mitigate flicker when reading from digital screens. o Aperture $\le 1.0$ mm. o Optical insert using black PMMA (IR-pass acceptable). o Matte surface finish to match frame texture. o All LEDs disabled or removed. • Capture Trigger: Smart Gesture & Document Detection. The system must analyze visual input (low-power monitoring) to automatically trigger the high-resolution capture sequence in two scenarios: 1. Document Alignment: When a document (A4/Letter aspect ratio) is detected and stabilized. 2. Pointing Gesture: When a finger is detected pointing specifically at a target element (e.g., a paragraph, a title, or a specific section number) and remains stable (frozen) for approx. 1 second. • Audio & Feedback: Stereo bone conduction transducers integrated in temples. o Capture Confirmation (Success): The system must generate a discrete, barely audible bone-conduction "beep" immediately upon successful image capture. Zero sound leakage to the outside is a strict requirement. • Power: $\sim 350$ mAh LiPo battery with Qi wireless charging (no exposed USB ports). • Controls: Power via Hall sensor + magnet (hinge-based). No accelerometer. B. Pocket Unit • Core: Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W + Integrated 4G/LTE Modem/Module (HAT or USB) with physical SIM slot. • Cellular Connectivity: The 4G/LTE module is mandatory for Cloud AI connectivity. Must be compatible/tested with Spanish networks. • Haptic Feedback (Error Alert Only): The unit must include a small vibration motor. o Error/Timeout: If the network fails, or if the AI does not respond within the 10-second timeout, the Pocket Unit must emit 2 rapid vibration pulses to alert the user. o Note: Do NOT vibrate for successful capture (that is handled by the glasses' audio). • Enclosure: 3D printed ABS or PETG. o Passive cooling only (no fans). o Accessible slot/tray for the physical SIM card. • Interface: o Two recessed physical buttons for Volume (+/-). o Power Button: Dedicated button for Power On and Safe Shutdown (soft-off). • Battery Indicators: 3-color LED scheme (Green/Yellow/Red) for Head Unit and Pocket Unit battery levels. • Power: 5,000 mAh battery, BMS, USB-C charging. C. Communication & Firmware • Internal Connectivity: Bluetooth Classic only (SPP profile) between Head Unit and Pocket Unit. Wi-Fi disabled on head unit. • Image Preprocessing: Grayscale conversion and JPEG compression to minimize data size. • Network Logic: 4G/LTE preference. If signal drops or timeout (>10s) occurs, trigger the error vibration immediately. • Target Latency: $<5$ seconds end-to-end (from capture to audio start). D. Software Architecture • Function: Multimodal Image Analysis. o Instead of local OCR, the system must send the compressed image directly to a Vision-capable Cloud AI (e.g., GPT-4o, Gemini Pro Vision). o This allows the logic of "where to start/stop reading" to be controlled via the prompt based on visual layout and finger position. • AI: Cloud AI supported (API-based).
