I'm searching for a skilled craftsman who can create a custom-formed concrete column base. The base supports a timber column from standing water so the column foot never rots. The column is to be 6" by 6". The column is part of a free standing trellis. This type of base is essentially a concept used in Japanese architectural design. The base must be cast in a clean, rectangular profile that matches the post’s footprint, and it has to cure to a flawless smooth finish—no exposed aggregate, no texturing, just a tight, even surface that is ready for sealing. The base must also include one steel reinforcing bar such that it will be secured to a poured-in-place concrete footing supporting the base and column. Most important, the top of the base must interlock with the timber column. There are a variety of solutions that will satisfy this condition. Could be steel or at best, done with interlocking timber wedges. If you can manage the concrete, we can work together to finalize a detailed design. If you can fabricate and deliver the finished base, great; if you prefer to hand off drawings and a fabrication schedule so my local crew can pour on-site, that works too. Either way I expect: • Accurate formwork design sized to my column • Proper reinforcement detail to handle vertical load and minor lateral forces • Concrete mix recommendation for long-term moisture resistance • Clear curing instructions to guarantee that smooth surface Please share photos or a short reel of similar precision concrete pieces you have produced, walk me through your proposed timeline, and note whether you can include on-site placement or will ship the finished base instead. My time line is open ended. This is part of a renovation to my private residence. I am a retired architect. But I expect to get under way by fall. If the column base is a success, I am considering including a custom made bench that would be integrated with the trellis. You can view my current art work on [login to view URL]
