I need assistance analyzing pipes and ducts from a Revit system family. Requirements: - Analyze both pipes and ducts. - Define local object axis with specific criteria (not automatically). - Ensure Z-axis is along the length of the object. Ideal Skills & Experience: - Proficiency in Revit, especially with system families. - Experience in pipe and duct analysis. - Understanding of axis assignment and local object orientation. We use Revit for duct layout and piping layout. Those items are system families and assume the World Coordinate System (WCS) which means XYZ are always the same direction. Which is great for creation of the items in Revit, but I need to get them out in IFC and converted to another type of object. Mainly a pipe in our system. This XYZ issue means pipes running up and down convert correctly, but pipes running side to side convert of the same axis, so I get a tiny short piece of pipe. Is there a way in Revit to tell System families to use to Local object coordinate system, not global?

I’ve handled several MEP coordination projects where extracting precise centerline data was critical for clash detection and automated fabrication workflows. Your requirement for axis analysis within Revit system families aligns perfectly with my experience using the Revit API to programmatically isolate geometry and verify connectivity logic. By focusing on the underlying location curves and vector properties of these families, I can ensure the analytical data is both mathematically accurate and fully compatible with your specific downstream project requirements. I will leverage the Revit API or Dynamo to access the LocationCurve property of the Pipe and Duct classes, ensuring we capture the exact center-of-mass vector data for every segment. I will implement a script that iterates through your system families, calculates the geometric centerlines, and exports the coordinates into a structured format like CSV or JSON, or generates them as reference lines within a dedicated workset. This process includes specific logic to handle transitions and eccentric reducers, ensuring axis continuity is maintained through complex geometric changes or slope variations. Finally, I will validate the generated axes against the source MEP systems to ensure zero deviation between the physical model and the resulting analytical data. To tailor the output, are you looking for raw XYZ coordinate data for external calculation, or do you need the axes represented as 3D geometry within the model for visual coordination? I’m also curious if there are specific naming conventions that should be mapped to the axis data for easier identification. I’m available for a brief chat to discuss your Revit version constraints and can provide a sample output quickly to ensure we are aligned.

Hi, Thank you for your job posting. As a Revit and BIM expert, I have rich experience in handling system families, IFC workflows, and coordinate system transformations. I understand the issue with Revit system families using the global coordinate system (WCS), which can cause incorrect geometry interpretation when exporting to IFC—especially for horizontally oriented pipes and ducts. For your project, I can analyze both pipe and duct elements and implement a solution to define a consistent local object axis, ensuring the Z-axis aligns correctly along the element length. This can be addressed through geometry extraction, element direction vectors, and transformation logic during export or post-processing, since Revit does not natively assign local coordinate systems to system families. I can help develop a reliable workflow (via Dynamo, API, or IFC processing) to correctly reinterpret orientation and avoid the short-pipe issue. If this aligns with your needs, I’m ready to review your files and provide a practical, working solution. Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks.
